I will be attending my first animal rights protest downtown here in Chicago at City Hall. I'm not sure if many of you are familiar with Foie Gras but it is a delicacy that has been banned here in Chicago because of the animal abuse/torture involved with it. It really is atrocious.. I did a research paper on this awhile ago and I was horrified after my hours of research, what goes on.

Anyway, Mayor Daley will be at City Hall this Wed signing a document that will try and repeal the ban. Him and other politicians... many are trying to stop him...

I am really excited!! If you see me on the news, let me know! lol.

Event Description: Mayor Daley announced that the vote to repeal the Foie Gras Ban will be completed at the next City Council Meeting on Wed., May 23 just as Sheila O'Grady, the mayor's former chief-of-staff, became the new Executive Director of the Illinois Restaurant Association which is pushing for repeal. Alderman Edward Burke has announced his intention to call for a City Council vote on to repeal Chicago's ban on the sale of foie gras. (Foie Gras is the enlarged liver of a goose or duck served as an expensive delicacy. The animals' livers are enlarged by force feeding them with 18 inch metal rods and causes ruptured internal organs or asphyxiation when food becomes impacted in their throats and digestive systems. See www.banfoiegras.org for more details. Foie Gras is so cruel that 13 European countries and the state of California have enacted similar bans. According to a 2004 Zogby poll, 77% of Americans favor the ban of Foie Gras because of its cruelty.)

Alderman Joe Moore, sponsor of the Foie Gras Ban, has urged people in Chicago's animal protection community to be vocal at next Wednesday's City Council Meeting. Alderman Moore risked his re-election on banning Foie Gras because he feels that "preventing the sale of a food product derived from the torture of innocent animals are precisely the sort of issues that should be tackled by legislative bodies." The idea that legislative bodies can act to create a humane world for all animals (including humans) is profound and is why national animal protection organizations (such as HSUS, PETA, and Farm Sanctuary) and industries that profit by harming animals will be closely watching what happens in Chicago next Wednesday, May 23rd.

I'm urging you, fellow Chicago Animal Rights Meetup members to join me and many other local activists, in a Demonstration and Press Conference at City Hall on Wednesday at 9AM. We want to have at least 200 activists there holding signs (which we will provide), occupying city hall chambers, and chanting in support of the Ban in the City Hall Lobby. Please show up and bring a friend (or two). I realize that this may mean taking a half-day off or even a full-day off from work, but if you attend one animal protection effort all year, THIS IS THE ONE!

We will also lobby Aldermen in person and ask that you call, or better yet, visit your alderman (dial 311 if you don't know who that is). Most importantly, please plan to attend next Wednesday, 5/23, at 9AM at City Hall (121 N. LaSalle).

Read up on what happens to these animals ... it's sick. Not to mention you are eating FATTY LIVER. Ick. They suffer so much. If anyone say what happens to these animals, I think you'd change your mind. It's really sad and there is no need for it.. plus America is fat enough.. they don't need to be consuming fatty liver, too. LOL. ;)
