I did.

i'm on an glass artist site and i mentioned that I went to a show on saturday and lowered my prices at the last minute. I CLEARLY stated that my overhead was very little, so lowering my prices didn't hurt me, but i did well in sales and wouldn't have had i not lowered the prices. I also clearly said that my first set of prices was purely a guess, but when i saw the other artists prices (and the quality of their work), i re-thought mine.

well. you'd think i murdered someone.

one woman said I devalued my self.

another basically said that I ruined it for the rest of them (they aren't even all in the US and none are from my area) and someone else said that *I* am what is wrong with artistry today.

fucking idiots.

btw, at the same time that i'm basically arguing with most of the forum about how i did not DEVALUE my self by lowering my prices to something more reasonable, I also had a post in their equivalent to a chat forum. I said that I was invited to my bosses house, where she's hosting a party for the heads of all the divisions world wide, including the owner here. and me.

So i had asked what they suggested I bring and I said that i'd most likely bring a bottle of wine and... maybe a small handmade dish or something. half the people there said it would be rude of me to bring something.
wtf? rude to bring a hostess gift? a bottle of wine is rude?? our US salesman is bringing 2 dozen lobsters from MA... why is THAT not rude, but me bringing wine is?

god i hate these people.
 
Get slick, stenz, fizzle, Y, jack, SA, sulma, EP, maybe ssme but prolly not until like 4:30, etc. and all those other crazy witty mothers on it - you know where to find em. It'll be fun - at least for me. Those dudes make me laugh.

they lack perspective. either most of them make a living off of their art, or they are very serious and focused about it. but you are different (lol understatement). even though arts/crafts/whatever are important to you, i don't think you define yourself through it.

there was ONE sane person who said "cool- you wanted to sell stuff and you did- congrats!"

everyone else got personally wounded.

yeah, maybe they earn a living doing this- i don't know. one woman jumped all over me because I didn't know EXACTLY how much glass i used to make the jewelry i sold I'm talking the difference in what I thought to what it probably was was maybe... a $6 sheet of glass and she said i'll never earn anything if i don't know my costs. i was off by... 50 CENTS an item.

if i could go there, not as an artist, but as someone interested in glass work and purchasing some shi'at, then i would request a special series of sex toys. all hand-crafted to precision. finely-blown, pun intended. using this as an 'in', i'd then start dropping little gems here and there, relating to what i want made and what i want it for (this is best part). absurd, outrageous, disgusting, etc. and yet, not over-the-top, because you want to maintain the appearance of legitimacy for a while - go under their radar.

ex:

I am on a support group for two health issues and many (if not all) of these woman are morbidly obese. These woman attacked me when I told them that obesity is an illness (like any addiction) and that only a small majority of obesity is caused by actual physical ailments and the other portion caused by lack of exercise and too much food. You would have thought I killed their families. They totally went off on me!
Many said "I am big boned" another said "I used toothpaste for years and the chemicals in the toothpaste made me fat"

lol... maybe i'm wrong, but it sounds like you were being kind about their obesity and they attacked you anyway? that makes a ton (pun intended) of sense.

the people on the other board i'm on are not all women. maybe half and half. i think the jewerly makers are women but the other artists aren't.
they are just overly sensitive if you ask me. and poor.

Yeah I was being kind b/c this place I go is really filled with people who are hurting. I'm soft on that board...I have to be!

I came in and tried to help with actual answers and advice.

If you've been on this board very long you should know that they worry about the glass jewelry market being saturated with cheap goods from emerging market producers and from amateurs who bring down the rest of the market with lower-quality "I just got my kiln and now I want to make money with it" goods. (Check the archives if you don't believe me)

So if you post something that says you contributed to that worry, yeah, you're going to get some offended people. No, you don't raise your prices to $200, especially if, as you admit, your work wasn't worth it. You do some research before entering the market, and figure out what the market wants, what it's willing to pay for it, and how to produce it so you make a profit. I'm not sure why you think "it's my first show" is an excuse for not doing your homework.

According to your other posts, you're in marketing and sales, so you should know that. That's basic marketing 101 stuff, and the rules don't change just because it's glass. If you're serious about having a business, you need to be just as professional as those other guys. If you're not serious, why waste your time bringing down the market just a little bit more?"

well after one woman said i was participating in bringing down the whole art glass industry, another woman told me that she and a few other make 6 figure incomes...

so i asked how my few hundred in sales in cow country effected them AT ALL.

or why they weren't attacking grandma for selling her quilted stuff at the show and not bringing down the entire textile industry.

they couldn't reason with me. i'm relentless and a good debater. i'm a masterdebater in fact.

yes, exactly. the normal people weren't saying that, but plenty were.
one said that because I tried explaining that this was not a juried show at an art center, but a small show in a lakeside community and that they weren't the type of people who lay out tons of money for things- that i was showing CONTEMPT for my customer. contempt. i'm not seeing the logic in recognizing the market and gearing towards it as contempt, but they also pointed out that it was a gross error of me, considering i'm in marketing.

I could have SWORN that marketing involves knowing your target audience and adjusting towards it...
 
yeah i dunno, i'd have to kind of agree with them....but you can't help that some people will pay for crap, because they don't know it's crap. with most things, it eventually becomes evident that you get what you pay for. They just need to find a way to overcome people buying the cheap crap.....which involves marketing their own value properly.

And if you aren't making cheap crap, my guess is people will keep buying your crap, and you'll eventually raise your prices, because you'll have to.

what i sold wasn't crap- it just wasn't find jewelry. next time i'm using better materials and raising the price though.

Precisely, and they are dumb. Here is what they would have done. They would have taken their pieces to the show and priced them as if they were selling them on Rodeo Drive. Then, they would have gone home having sold nothing or almost nothing. However, they would feel oh so damned proud because they are ARTISTS, DAMN IT!

No big mystery why the term "starving artists" is axiomatic, is it?

I use to go on this one car forum. Was on the "chat" part and people on there were soo dumb. I thought to myself I should get some peeps from ef over there to rip them apart, it was me vs almost the whole board about something I was completely right and they were arguing with me that I was wrong. It was about getting a buisness name and I ended up getting it and they still argued with me that I was wrong even thought I got everything legit and have all the paper work from the state to prove it. Thats why I dont even go on any other chat forums other than here.

the idiots on this glass site i was on blasted some guy for asking about a techniqe he wanted to try. they acccused him of stealing the design. he was like, "i don't want to replicate the DESIGN, i just want to know how they DID IT."

yup. i sometimes post on a figure/fitness competitor board where they all swear no gals juice that are competing professionally. so when I call bullshit on that- they all go psycho..lol :evil: its like the unwritten rule that you DO NOT talk about steriods on a womens fitness boards. pretty retarded.
