I serve moonshine at many of my higher-profile customer events and at virtually always when I'm hosting an international event.

I've got several quarts of clear lined-up for a customer party on Tuesday evening.

good way to lose your eye sight

Most definitely. Methanol residuals will blind you quickly. Plus there's often many other low molecular weight organic solvents in poorly-made moonshine.

And don't *ever* drink clear moonshine from someone you don't trust. The charred (brown stuff, aged in a burned oak keg) is dangerous enough as-is. And moonshine condensed in a car's radiator is a slow, painful death too.

For now, we simply trust the moonshiner. But he's getting old and we may need to change suppliers at some point. But the good news is, we have a laboratory outside of knoxville with several really nice GC/MS devices, so I'll test the new vendor thoroughly.

My nerd ears perk up when talking about GC/MS

How do you reconcile this with your position on drugs?

Moonshine is a misdemeanor here in Tennessee. So if I get cited, I'll deal with the consequences. It's not that different than the fact I'll definitely exceed the posted speed limit of 55 mph on my way into the gym here in an hour or so.

I didnt mean legally. Surely with all the health risks of ingesting such a substance there would be plunkey tax dollars spent on users health costs?

Most definitely. I'm sure we already spend plunkey dollars on methanol poisoning. That's why home-made alcohol should (IMO) remain illegal for now. Expanding its manufacture and distribution via legalization of home brew could get really ugly.

What I'd really like to see is Americans not being forced to pay for other people's bad decisions. Then we could legalize all drugs, regardless of where they are manufactured or their intended effects.

That also opens the door to an even bigger idea:

You could revolutionize the drug market overnight with one easy move: Eliminate FDA approvals. Instead, force companies to carry an insurance policy. A private market would immediately spring-up to price the risk of any given drug based on a number of factors (i.e. manufacturing conditions, scope of operations, type of drug, other risks). Once a manufacturer demonstrates proof of insurance, they are immediately granted a license to make and distribute the drug.
