Ever been promoted to management too soon

thats definately happened to me and I could use some advices.

basically what the deal is, we had a supervisor on work exchange from germany and he is going back, well upper management came to me and asked me if I wanted that position which I accepted as per my post last week or whatever.

as of yesterday I moved into this position, well apparently our half ass import fake mexican vet has a wife on that shift and she assumed she would be taking over and began to do my job. as anyone would be a bit bothered I explained nicely that I was supervisor and I am suppose to do that and its ok for her to just do regular duties.

well long story short her husband came over flipped his shit and made a big stink and half the damn farm is pissy that the new guy is in charge blah blah and he made it seem like im an asshole.

not sure if anyone has farmed but people definately dont like new people coming in and running the show but im sure its this way in other areas.

so id like to know how you overcame this bullshit because im ready to cut my losses and walk out the door

It's like that in corporate too. Once you become management it is just more politics and more headaches. My husband had major issues when getting promoted to management and dealt with it for a yr and then got out. It took too much of a toll on him. You will always have jealous people trying to knock you down and it is hard to be a good manager at times. I am sure my post is not much reassurance, but hang in there or find something else. Good luck!

ya I definately enjoyed my job alot more before and its only been a day, I just felt that I had enough knowledge to take on the position which I still do,however people are now not working with me over this flare up and I sure as fuck cant do it all and its easier to get rid of one person(me) then everyone I supervise

Stick is out, no one gets ahead by quitting. Don't let anyone step on your toes, fire someone to prove that you are not taking their shit. It works. Once they see that you are a pushover and get mad easily, they will have you beat. It's only been one day, give it time.

I definately agree I cant be a push over which is what caused the flare up,I handled it without getting mad even though this assclown got in my face twice even when I took a step back to get some personal space.

id fire his wife in a heart beat however upper management will overrule it and he does the vet work on the farm and has more worth then me in my opinion so they wont can both of them to keep me ,even though I have family tied into the business who is a big financial investor, its tricky.

I do plan to ride it out, they will have to fire me or get me to quit by taking away my promotion

it sucked being management....with my temper and my mouth i had to constantly watch myself at all times. i was glad when they downsized and laid me off from that place.

Welcome to a managers life. Respect is something that cant be forced, it must be earned through your words and actions. Typical stuff. Hang tight and always try to do the right thing in the eyes of your employees. It's like being a captain of a team. They respect you still can do the job on the field and ascend to the next level, but have there best interest in mind.

my immediate team has no issues besides this one lady who assumed she was up for the promotion, the real trouble is coming from her husband in another area running his yap and telling her to do the bare minimum and not be motivated and the great worker she was prior to this.

Im definately going to be sticking close to friends in high places and keep them updated on all of the non sense stemming from this.

well off to work, lets see how it goes today

Don't throw in the towel just yet, that's what they want you to do.

You are the new babysitter and the kids (not necessarily all but enough) will test you to see your limits and look to see what they can get away with not doing and what they can get from you.

You need to know the rules better than they do, listen to them and her what they are really saying and react wisely. You have to remain professional even if they do not and don't be afraid of going to your boss to ask questions as well.

There are only two reason people get promoted:

1 - You deserve it and someone thought you were capable of doing the job.

2 - They couldn't legally fire you from your former job but if they promote you they can either eliminate the position or deem you incompetent and then fire you.

That's the fault of your superiors not you but you do need to bring to their attention because her and his behavior will cause problems for you and the rest of the crew over time.

Good Luck

I say, it's a fine line. Most people respond to genuine compliments, appreciation, asking nicely, etc.

Unfortunately, that can lead to the 'give an inch and they'll try to take a mile' scenario.

It's a balancing act between relying on your relationship to get them to do stuff and just pulling rank.

The only thing I'd say is mostly give the BOD at first and let the people show their true colors, then start dealing with them appropriately.

Be professional. Do not stoop to his level. If you are courteous and deal with it in a professional manner he will end up looking like the fool. Beleive it or not, the good guy usually wins in the end.

well I guess he threatened to quit if they didnt can me and my boss laughed and said there is the door.

he now looks like a mental bitch with anger issues to management and a pussy to everyone else because he stayed.

definately a situation where I underestimated my worth and he overestimated his.

I feel you, Oak... I always said that I would suck at management. I am now in week three of THE BEST job opportunity that I have ever carved out for myself. I admit that in the beginning it was stressfull as the entire staff looked at me like the Angel of Death (I fired 2 people in the first 2 days and 2 more got a stern talking to) so EVERYONE looked at me funny. The 2 people who got the talking to were old enough to be my parents so that made it doubly hard. But I stood my ground and though I gave tremendous respect (even used the verbage "I realize and respect that you are old enough to be my parent HOWEVER you need to realize that the founders of the company put me in this position for a reason and you NEED TO return that respect.")

Just take a deep breath, and speak with kindness and respect but remain very firm when speaking to those that you manage.

This is the way I have come to view such situations. My position with the company IS my future - we are talking A LOT of money so either those under me accept my direction and function at maximal capacity (thus increasing their financial bottome line) or they need to move on as there is NO WAY I will sacrifice my future for their

A - inability

or

B - unwillingness

to do so.

:)

I WUV my job.

This should be cake if you can handle getting married as soon as you did.

congratulations, looks like you did the right thing here. Just keep doing the right/best thing and you'll do fine.

You tend to your job, always take care of your people, if somethings not getting done, do your best to find out why and solve the problem to everyones satifaction before going postal, if it can be worked out to everyones satisfaction, remember your th boss. Keep your boss informed as to whats going on but you don't have to discuss every detail, if he had that kind of time, he'd do it himself.....

When your getting the cows up it's easier to lead them into the pens than "drive" them in. Every once in awhile, one gets stupid and you have to slap that one to keep the others from following, same deal man...

You'll be fine, give them some time to see how you want to do things.

you guys have great advice,I definately appreciate it,ive been in supervisory roles before and failed miserably so hopefully I get better people managing skills this time around. which has always been my weak point.

I did fire that dudes wife yesterday because they still let her milk and then she tried to be the boss again and after the first time I now have the ability to fire and I did with support for the uppers.
