Barry Sanders is and was nasty and retired early out of respect for Walter Payton. Barry Sanders lacked the up the middle running game. He excelled everywhere else.
Emmitt deserves the record. He is a bruiser. He is no Walter Payton but he is tough and a warrior.

Where's Christian "The Nigerian Nightmare" Okoye these days. Him and Barry Word formed a tremendous backfield. Too bad it only lasted for one good season. Imagine those guys for 10 years with Steve Deberg and the cast. Not a bad team.

okoye is a high school coach, i saw a nfl films special on him last summer...

barry ran up the middle when he had to, he didnt lose yards on 3rd and 1 unless the play was completely stuffed... the dude could go straight, don't kid yourself cuz you didnt get to see him weekly... last time i saw barry he looked EXACTLY THE SAME as he did when he was playing... it confused me when i would see barry at the pool hall after he retired from detroit... made me think... "OOOOOH GOODY, barry's back!!!" and nope, nothing ever happened.. barry isn't all that big in the community to be honest... but, he's a nice guy and lets others have his overflow of pussy...

anyway, i just miss barry.. and seeing how i HATE the fucking wodin loved (keeep losing fucker, i love it) cowboys.... well, it angered me to see emmitt get the record, but i had to see it.. i was in 7th grade when walter got it, i remember the game and the pause in play... i remember it being a big deal... and now emmitt has it and to be honest, i dont think ANYONE in the NFL today will be the guy to break this record... i'll give one thing, apart from his 2 game hold out emmitt was pretty damn durable (and that monday night head flop vs. the bears).... that's gonna stand for quite a few years.

I think that Barry was the best to play the game, but that doesn't mean that Emmitt shouldn't get as much respect as Barry or Walter.

He has played year after year without injury, constantly putting up solid numbers. He deserves the record, and he led the Cowboys to multiple Superbowl wins. I have never been an Emmitt Smith, and I have definitely never been a Cowboy fan. However, I respect the manner in which Emmitt approached the game, and to anyone who says that he doesn't care about winning and losing you are just kidding yourself. IMHO he has always been a team player and he still got the record. Barry was a one-man show, but Emmitt's accomplishments came on a team with multiple superstars.

My pic from the current crop of young running backs who have a shot at breaking it is Ladainlian Tomlison. If he stays healthy, he has a shot.

I hate the cowboys and i hate Aikman/Irvin/Smith even more yet this award does not go out to the best RB of all time. It's the record for most yards, so no matter if he had a great o-line and great team means nothing. Remember it was you guys who said he got the ball 30+ times a game yet only missed 5 games due to injury in 13 seasons!! He deserves it more than Barry who decided to hang it up instead of playing out his career for the fans and organization who stuck by him no matter what. Barry Sanders had no motivation and no ambition unlike (and i hate to say it) Emmitt Smith.

Sure this game is all about wins but wouldn't you love to be a record holder in any professional sport?

Allright guys, listen up. The rushing record is a record. An incredible feat. Consistency, pain, endurance, and a little luck all lead up to it. There have been some running backs that have come and gone with more talent than Emmitt. The bottom line is that he stayed in there and toughed out all his injuries and got the record while doing so. He was consistant.

I definitely watched Barry Sanders through his career. He was arguably the best change of direction back of all time. No question. East and west he was the best. North and south he is not even top 100. Something out of nothing was his style, while running outside. Off-tackle he was almost invisible.

Walter payton was one of the toughest ever. The man was 200 lbs. He played like he was 260 and beat the shi* out of everyone in his way and kept those legs pumping. If I was a coach I would ask players to watch him and study. Think about the blocks he used to throw. All purpose.

Tomlinson is an incredible talent. I agree with you. He has to hope for health and maybe he has a chance. It is so damn hard to stay healthy in the NFL. It's a battlefield.

Curtis Martin has 9600+ in his 7 and a half seasons. He'd have to stay healthy and productive for another 4 or 5 to have a chance and it's doubtful.

Marshall Faulk has over 10,000 in his 8 and a half seasons. He might have a chance but he has to stay healthy as well.

I would doubt either have them will beat Emmitt's new record especially given the how much longer he plays.

think about this for a minute.. martin and faulk.... about 10000 yards each.. say by the end of the year emmitt will be at 17250...

they are a GOOD CAREER away from breaking the record.. they'd need about 80% of what they have already done... and it will basically take them another 8 years to do it... that is unbelievable... like i said, i was bitter yesterday... but god damn, emmitt sure did run for a fucking ton of yards, its kind of hard to even comprehend....

i just hope he realizes that he isnt half the back he was.... and calls it a career after this season... hambrick is capable but the cowboys (though i hate them) need to address some issues.. first and foremost get younger at all the skill positions.. running back is a big issue in the league... i think they need to settle on a qb and hutchinson is a start.. they have 88 on offense (shit, i'm drawing a blank).. anyway, he's a good rookie wr... galloway needs to be let out of town, he's a frail little bitch who cost dallas some good talent... the cowboys arent all that far from contending again, especially how the league is now... but first thing first- settle on a qb, admit you could have been wrong here and there.... and build via the draft, NOT FA
