Embarrassing moment at Six Flags

This young guy and his friends approach me and ask me if I will play the game where you hit the stone with the sledgehammer, if they pay me. I presumed he wanted to win a stuffed animal for his girlfriend. You have to hit the stone hard enough to ring the bell at the top of the pole. I was flattered and said, "Sure, but I won't charge you anything, I'll just see if I can do it." I was thinking it probably would be easy. So he pays the attendant and a small crowd gathers to cheer me on. I couldn't ring the damn thing. Came very close, but couldn't do it. Man was I embarrassed. My daughter had heard this guy say, "If he can't do it, there's no way I can do it." Well, he went after me and he did do it, which embarrassed me even more. I hid it well though, at least I think. I did see about a 260 pd. big man hit it and not ring it also, so that made me feel a little better. There must be a technique to it. I hit that thing so damn hard my legs vibrated.

it's all physics dude... a 40 lb girl could ring it... it's not about strength... it's about torque positioning and speed

You have the hit the center from vertical. No angle. Also, you need power, not just strength. By that, I mean you need to be able to accelerate it as quickly as possible. Regular training does not enhance that component. Some PLing tactics, as well as things like OLY and SM, would make it pretty easy.

WAS THE GUY A MIDGET? I HEAR MIDGETS CAN HIT THE BELL ON THE FIRST TRY.

yes, what duritz said. on a further note, you're a little bitch, and if i was there watching I would have laughed and pointed:lmao:

Ya I've rung the bell before and what they're saying is right. You have to hit it coming straight down and dead center.

Of course, I knew all these things. I was just giving you guys a chance to show off your knowledge.

:D

You probably hit it too hard.

Seriously.

It was designed for an average person, not a weight lifter.

Yes. I go with this too. It sounds much better.

grab the mallet and smash the carney in the face... do us all a favor.

I am not trying to help you save face.

You probably did not allow the base to make full contact with the mechanism that sends the bell up. You probably just temporarily jammed the mechanism, ergo, it did not absorb the power from the impact.

I didn't think you were. I'll let you guys debate this one. It could have been a number of reasons, such as the one you stated. It wasn't a lack of power or speed, that I'm almost certain of. I figured it was either the angle that I hit it from, where I hit it, and maybe that I didn't follow thru properly.

Have you ever tried to hit a hammer really hard?

What happens?

The nail usually bends because of the force of the impact.

If you hit it hard but not too hard, it will go straight in (controlling for angle for both trials).

No.... Assuming the angle was controlled and straight, then the nail would go in if you hit the nail really hard. I used to do a lot of woodwork stuff, and i'd use the "use a lot of force and make the nail go in once" technique. :D

You apparently do not hit the nail hard enough with your chicken arms and all.
