EARLY morning Training off..........

What does your early morning schedule look like? Do you eat first? What time do you have to be at work??? I'm thinking of making the switch and want to get my schedule down pat! Does it vary between on cycle and off? Much thanks!

Well.. i don't really have the time to workout in the morning.. for 2 reasons.. i work at 8:30am and my gym is a 15-20 minute drive one-way.. i moved a few months ago and i just kept my membership at the gym.. plus i love the place.. but anyway.. i occasionally do morning cardio.. but i am just NOT a morning person.. i have my most intense and focused workouts in the evening.. from like 9-11pm.. i am dead on then.. but i work and have school at night.. so my free time sometimes is close to nil.. but i always get my training in.. a LOT of people advocate AM training.. some say PM training.. but what it boils down to is each individual's internal clock.. whenever your body naturally feels the most energized is when you should work out.. i feel the most energy at night.. so i work out at night.. but if i was going to workout in the morning.. i would DEFINATLY eat before and do my usual postworkout meals as well.. the time of day should not affect your pre and postworkout meals and supps.. etc.. but before you go switching to AM training.. take a few days and notice when you really seem to perk up.. and work out then.. anyway.. good luck man

if u workout upon awakening before u eat, you will increase your basal metabolism drastickly trouhgout the hole day. your metabolism will not sink until you go to slepp or u take a nap. its enough with just 30 min of cardio to get this fat burning boost. if you have a higher level of bodyfat its a good choice to workout in the morning before u eat.

aaahhh jkurz...if your stuck on your routine of cutting bro, its going to be hard for you to adjust to working out in the morning...i have to workout in the AM due to schedule...i have to be at work at 8 (but have to commute almost 40 min) so i get up at 330am to eat...(yeah i know..crazy) go back to bed, then wake up at 5 and head to the gym....afterwards i have my PWO shake around 6 or so...head home, shower....head off to work..once i get to work i have eggs and oats....then the days meal plan is whatever i set it to be...this routine works really well for me...

Why do you think I'll struggle?? I'm going to nix am cardio and train instead. Now I just need to plan out my morning/eating, etc. I need to be in the office at 7-7:30am........so, If I wake up at 5am, go str8 to the gym, train from 530-630, and then slam an MRP when I get home, I should be ok, no? OR should I just f-it and sleep in and then train in the PM?

Should be fine.. it may take some time for you body to get used to the AM workouts.. maybe 2 weeks or so.. but probably not too bad for you since your used to AM cardio.. but yeah.. i would nix the cardio.. or cut it back from like 7 days.. to like 3 or 4.. and instead of 30 minute cardio bouts.. and things like that.. train like a sprinter.. it will build muscle.. i can't stress this enough in people that have a hard time gaining weight.. long cardio bouts will kill your progress unless your really trying to lose weight.. anyway.. your plan should be perfect.. as long as you get enough sleep.. at 6 hours man.. you may be able to run on less.. i can.. but your body needs atleast that to fully recover.. but make SURE you get something in your stomach before a workout.. i use AST's Creatine HSC.. which has 34g of pure glucose.. and 5g of creatine.. or their DGC.. which also has 34g of pure glucose and that's it.. you will need those carbs and some kind of protein.. preferably whey protein in water.. so it will get in your body FAST.. and then do your postworkout shake as well.. training on an empty stomach can work.. but it's not wise in your situation.. anyway.. just try it out and see what happens.. what's the worst that could happen?

Thanks bro...now I'm just torn on what to consume.............what if I do a 1/4 cup quick oats and whey shake at 5am, train at 5:30 - than an MRP at 7am.........doable? I've trained on an empty tank before though........it's not all that bad...........maybe a swig of liquid protein, aminos?

I like it when I work out in the morning strictly because it makes the day seem that much easier. Goes by faster and at the end of the day you can relax (or workout again)

I currently do this:

5:30am wake and eat 100g oats, 1 cup of egg whites (with 1 yolk)
6:30-8:00am train (while sipping on some whey and dextrose)
8:00am PWO shake - oats and whey
8:45am Proper meal - right now it's steak

I typically get to work at around 9:15.

If I had to get to work by 7:30 like you, I would seriously consider going to bed at like 7-8pm and getting up at like 3:30am to lift before work. But that's just because I personally hate trying to get myself psyched up to go to the gym after having sat at a desk for 8 hours. Plus there's the added complication of what to eat PWO before bed... which goes away if you train early.

Alternatively, are you able to lift during your lunch break?

Sounds good to me.. get atleast 20g of protein.. and like 30-40g of carbs pre workout.. and the MRP post workout.. MRP should be fine.. good carbs.. high protein.. then just back to your normal schedule after that... should be perfect man.. i've trained AM on an empty tank as well.. but it's nothing compared to my workouts when i'm better prepared and fully fed as i should be.. just try a bunch of different things and see what works best.. everybody's body responds differently

looks good bro!

How detremental do you think it is to train on an empty tank?? Or train for the first half hour empty, then start your PW shake half-way through?

honestly bro, i wouldnt recommend it..i used to do the same thing..not realizing that it was hindering my stamina and power..i thought i was just weak....when i started bulking and hitting the weights hard..on an empty stomack..15 min into it i couldnt stand the hunger pain...strenght sucked big time...once i started eating 1 - 1:30 hours before......my training was 100% times better then on empty!! not a good idea to run on empty if your trying to bulk

my sole reason for training ion the am was so that I could nix the fasted cardio at 4:15am and SLEEP.....so now, I'm wondering if I should just walk the dog or something in the am, get all my meals in, and then go train around 5pm.....I don't think I could get used to eating at 430 am to train at 530am when I hear so many people say they train w/o eating first, it's PW that counts.........

I think it all depends on you..and how you will react to training on empty..it might work for you....i know it didnt for me.....best thing to do is try both sides of the spectrum, try one week on empty..see how you do...keep a logg including diet and training..then try the next week eating before training...and keep a logg too...compare...ultimately its how your body reacts...

good advice................what does your training shedule look like? Routine?

I work nights. I get up, eat and hit the gym about 1 1/2 hours afterowrds. That never changes, unless on the rare occasion I may work lunch and be off that night and it's a workout day. cardio is always done first thing in the morning on an empty stomach as well. Been doin this for years. Working out mid-day is okay, and later in the day, I feel I don't have as much energy. I like having my workout done early and my 2 PW meals out of the way anyway, so I can do business early and get on with my day. Afterwords it's only eating every 3 hours I gotta keep on top of.

This is what im currently doing right now..
330 am - protein intake/oats

5am- train (one body part per day so on Monday chest, tues/back, wed/shoulders, thurs/legs, fri/arms..sat/sun off. I keep my weights heavy 5-8 reps max 3-4 sets per exercise, and i have as lately been incoporationg drop sets for the last set)

Example of chest: Incline bench 3 sets 3-8 reps last set being a drop set
Incline dumbell press 3 sets last one being a dropped
dips 3 sets last one being a dropped
cable flies last one being a dropped..

6am or so PWO shake 50g of protein

8am - 10 scrammbled eggs (2 whole) w/1 cup oats.

right when i open my eyes, regardless if its middle of the night, or morning or afternoon, 50g whey isolates!

hey bro i hope this helps..

but i lift in the am as well cause i have judo at nite..

the most important thing is get some carbs in before the workout since you are trying to bulk and i dont think you need to get up much earlier just to eat just use faster digesting carbs

when im bulking this is what i do

i wake up at 6 and drink whey/dextrose or gatorade and hit the gym by like 620 i leave for work right from the gym on the way to work i drink another whey/dextrose shake once im at work i make a nice breakfast and just go from there

make sure you are eating bulking type foods throughout the day dont be afraid of a bit o fat

good luck you seem real motivated (lots of threads) so if you put 100% into it you will be fine

Thats what I'll do...........what about gatorade/whey preworkout and an MRP like Metrx or Myoplex post??

sound almost perfect..

this way you dont have to wake up 1hr or more before your workout.. the gatorade sugars will enter your system quickly and prevent you from just burning up muscle during the am workout.

how about sipping on gatorade during training?

I agree with sword on this.. especially for a hardgainer.. carbs during a workout can really help.. but only if your lifting heavy..

My ? is, does anyone train first thing either on an empty tank or with a few BCAAs...no food until post.......

jkurz: when i am cutting i do a lot of the stuff you had mentioned but your trying to bulk so you should increase your cals by a good amount and adding good cals pre/during/post workout are some of the most optimal times to add them

i would also give gatorade or another shake a try during your workout and see if you like it. i really can tell a difference during a real tough workout

I've been training in the AM for a few years. Was in a rut and switched my schedule up. Ended up liking the AM and stuck w/it.

Schedule:

5:15am Up
5:30am protein shake
Cardio starts @ 6am (30-40 min)
Hit the weights....
7:30 Shower
8:00 On my way to the office...

In by 8:45-9:00am...

2:30pm... usually looking for coffee! :)

How can you do cardio BEFORE training???? Yikes.......for me, I'm going to try and go at it on an empty tank for one week, then add a protein shake w/ gatorade in about 1/2 way through..........followed by either a homemade MRP or solid meal..............
