DUI License Plates For Repeat Offenders

I say make it happen, I don't know why it hasn't been done before.

Lawmaker wants 'DUI' license plates for repeat offenders - baltimoresun.com

Wont' happen.

first time a driver gets pulled over - he'll sue stating that the license plate made him a subject of discrmination. ACLU will take over and sue every agency of the government and state. It'll drag on for yeras and cost the govt millions in legal fees.

Want to stop DUI's? Place cops outside bars/clubs and when caught - fine the clubs. DUI's will stop immediately when said drunk patrons get blacklisted from the club cuz the'yre a liability.

No different than starting a fight.

They will just borrow someone else's car to get drunk in.

It's a great idea that we should implement.

You don't have a constitutional right to drive, so making such a plate manditory shouldn't be that tough. Sure you can argue equal protection, but the value of alerting other drivers that someone has a history of driving drunk should outweigh the drunk's right to privacy.

"Lawmakers in Ohio also unsuccessfully pushed for pink license plates for child predators."

If they did this in Louisiana, PICK would have incentive to molest underage boys. Almost like a reward for a bad deed.

Why, I'm all for it. What do you see is wrong with it?

nextup: pedophiles, drug dealers, illegals, anyone who pisses off the government and can use judges to embarass them.

That's what the ACLU will argue that it's "cruel and unusual punishment" and "governmetn stepping beyond it's means" and fight it all the way to the supreme court forcing the govt to spend millions defending it. Obama will get blamed that it's more "big brother" (funny how liberals are more big brother than conservatives!).

Not to mention, perps can just pay some mexican kid $20 to "steal" it and then claim it got stolen. What's the govt gonna do?

Think Britney Spears or Paris Hilton is gonna allow the govt to place that on her car?

hehe notice the subtle racism there? hehe.

i see no problem with a dui license plate. it would be no different than having a sr22. if you have a sr22 and are pulled over for a routine traffic stop. or a minor traffic violation. all its doing is acting as a reminder to cops to be more thorough during the stop, and to see if alcohol or drugs are playing a factor. having a plate would be easier than having a sr22. then a cop could just evaluate from a distance.

i could see this working if they somehow worked it into the offenders probation. that he/she had to carry a DUI license plate until probation was finished, and a repeat would result in holding the plate even longer. if not forever. i could see dumb asses either learning there lesson from having high insurance rates OR retards trying to beat the plate by not carrying insurance to avoid the higher rates. they'd have to make it so the person who is issued the plate HAS to carry insurance.

i don't see discrimination being a big deal. yeah some people might raise the flag. but, that's like a registered sex offender saying that its unfair their on online pedo maps or that they have to put a flag in there lawn or some kind of marking on the property so people know a registered sex offender lives there.

that's kinda also like a 1st/2nd time felon saying it's not fair that their not allowed to vote.

gonna save zero lives, and is a lame deterrent. peeps with the tags are probly gonna in even more accidents from not paying attention while being harassed. but hey, it's good to know that when someone is coming at you head-on going the wrong way in your lane that you should get out of the way because he has a yellow license plate and could be drunk

lol I just had a mental picture of that.

Driver: "Fuck, this guy's coming straight at me on the wrong side of the road. Should I swerve?"

Passenger: "Well, does he have a yellow license plate?"

Driver: "I dont know, his headlights are blinding me. I dont think so."

Passenger: "Don't worry about it then. I'm sure he'll move eventually."

Driver: "Oh shit! It's an Asian driver. We're dead!"

Here you get immediate suspension for 0.05 BAC or over. The next time this happens you get convicted.
I think the ignition interlock system works pretty well for convicted repeat offenders, the car won't start if you have any alcohol in your system at all.
As much as I hate drunk drivers, they are entitled to due process, and they are protected from asinine ideas like this which single them out.
Careless and dangerous drivers are just as much of a risk on the roads- are we to start giving them colour coded plates too? Where would this end? What about seniors?

my cousin got a felony dui and had to get a interlock system put in his vehicle. he has his gf blow for him in the morning when he goes to work. a guy from his work blows for him when he leaves. i know a lot of people who do this. makes it just as dumb as a plate.

yes seniors should have plates because they are always driving through buildings and getting away by saying "oops, i thought i was pressing on the brake"

Wow, I can't believe someone would do that for someone else!!!

Two simple views I have on this:

1) No repeat DUI offender belongs in control (or actually I should say out of control) of an automobile at all, so no need for the plates.

2) It's not fair for family, friends, or mechanics who might drive the car with the plates on it. I hate driving cars with bumper stickers of opposite political views of my own, or with personalized plates that would be goofy if it were my car.

Now the good thing about it: Nobody would browbeat you into loaning them a car with those plates. My wife won't drive my truck anymore since my plates are "6PAK ABZ".

Here in ohio they already have bright yellow plates with red writing for people with dui's.The majority of people driving with them that I see are women or younger girls.(Dont know if its their car or if boyfriends talk them into driving it)Around here they call them party plates.

Or they're just from Jersey

DUI should be 3 strikes (at the most) and you never drive again. Way too many people out there with like 12 convictions who are still able to drive.

What colour would the plate be for SUV driving moms yapping on cell phones? They are way more dangerous. Maybe brown for "oh shit, it's a soccer mom!"

Screw the plates. They should have to drive FUCHSIA cars!

where i live, today is the day the grace period ends for driving and talking/texting. Fine of 150 bucks or so

How about people with three DUI's don't get their license back instead? Like nimbus said, it's not going to do shit, and like kx said, it's humiliating for innocent people who might share the car. This is just a stupid scarlett letter deal and won't save a single life. It's a very slippery slope.

they should have a special plate for people over 60 ...they drive worse then drunk people

That's a good law. We've had it for over a year and stiffer fines.
I've been guilty of sending emails while driving and realizing how dangerous and irresponsible it is.

But if we're going to do that, we need to do reaction tests on the old geezers too. A 78 year old granny probably still has a lower reaction time than your average 20 year old texting.

the elderly are going to see a lot more welfare loss from losing their license than a 20 year old is going to from being told he can't text in the car. Granted, both are problematic, but I think it's fine to just start with texting and then work from there
