hah first of all its Frank, not Jeff.

this is definitly one of the more complicated parts of the movie, and anything anyone says is simply speculation. My theory is that since this movie touches on time travel and whatnot, this all takes place is something of a parallel universe, hence the beginning and end being very similar. I think his girlfriend was always meant to die, something about her loss of life closes the loop. What still boggles my mind is that when he sees Frank's face for the first time, hes clearly already been shot, leading the viewer to believe that this whole string of events has already occured, but we dont know what he did differently before, and why he really died (or did he?) at the end of this one.

part of this movie's brilliance is the sheer obscurity and indifintive questions it raises... plus the soundtrack works really well :D

just listen to the director/writers commentary on the dvd.

basically in life, every time you make a decision to do something, you enter a pathway in a universe. there are infinate parallel universes, one for each possible decision. the universe you live in is what is caused by the decision.

lets say you make "the wrong" decision (straying away from destiny for example) then you enter what is known as an unstable parallel universe, where after a certain period of time and things going wrong, that universe imploads on itself (in donnie darko this was symbolized by the twisters and everything)

when a universe imploads on itself, you go to the decision point (or fork in the road) that caused you to go into that universe, and you must remake that decision, over and over, no matter what you choose, until you end up in a stable universe(youv made the right decision)

basically in the movie:
donnie darko choses to follow his stupid little skitzo mind out into the garden, causing him to escape his death from the plane engine. this causes a chain of events that begins to ruin the lives and world for many people around him causing the universe to become unstable. it imploads on him and he is sent back to his decision point, where he choses to stay in bed and die so as not to cause the one he loves and his family and everyone else such trouble and trauma.

some say the bunny was the guy he shoots in the face coming from heaven, or a form god took to show him what his life would be like if he chooses to live (leave the bed and not die) so he makes the right decision and dies for everyone much like jesus

also some experts believe that the reason he was faced with the engine in the first place is because the airplane engine accidentally got stuck in the universe implosion and was sent back to the decision point with donnie darko falling on where he was sent back, along with him
