Doing the Haney shrugs and back problems

Are haney shrugs too risky to do if you have back problems already? can you hurt your back worse? . I'm looking for superior trap development and I will be trying haney shrugs for first time, what are your thoughts on this movement?
 
Dumbbell shrugs are going to best your best option if you have pre exsisting back problems.

The issue with barbell and machine shrugs is that you are locked in to a certain movement and don't have the same range of motion as you do with Dumbbells.

I would stick with dumbbell shrugs and dumbbell upright rows to develop your traps.
 
I don't know what a Haney shrug is. Is it something I've been doing for years and some new fat ass pl er renamed it to honor himself? Any way, if you want trap height, and who doesnt, use dumbells and do armpit rows. Pull the dB as high as you can, close to your body and your elbows should/will be pointing outwards. You might get as high as your pecs, but you will feel a contraction you don't just shrugging normally.
