Doing deads first

I just started to add deads consistently to my training. Today i did 5x5 and it felt like I had nothing left to do other lifts. So i sucked it up and did 4 sets of strict lat pulldowns. Im sure it will get easier as i get used to the physical stress deads apply to the body.

I always start with deads as well. Also doing 5x5. And yeah, I feel totally out of gas when I'm done. But you will adjust, just gotta give yourself some time.

Yeah I think it's pretty much a given that you'll be on empty after doing deads(especially the 5x5).

That's why I do them every other week as opposed to weekly. On my non-deadlifting back days, I start with pullups and heavy rows to get in the work that I couldn't get because of exhaustion from deads. On the back days where I do deads, I usually follow them with some rows and lat pulldowns in the higher rep ranges with focus on squeezing hard at the end of each rep.

Back when I was deadlifting every week, I did reach a point where I was able to still get a full back workout done, but it took a lot longer because I needed a few minutes after that last set of deads to rest. Grip is also a big factor depending on if you're using straps or not.

That’s why on 5x5 you would generally only do a couple of sets of two exercises. That should be enough after those tough sets of Deadlifts.

I agree with supersizeme about going to every other week, I think this works well. This also gives the lower back a rest which is particularly useful if you are also doing 5x5 Squats.

On my back/shoulers day I do OHP's first (5x5), then one of the 2x8-10's in between dead warm-ups. Then I hit the 5x5 deads.

Its pretty nasty, but I usually seem to have enough to do 2 sets pull-ups or pull-downs.....then 2 sets of a rear delt exercise after the deads are done.
I have to do this on Friday so I have a long rest after that.

the body will adapt...keep up with the deads, there is no good replacement for that key exercise. Youll get stronger and your endurance will grow...

yea..give it time. doing deads the first time will wipe you out!! but keep doin them and you'll get used to them!! tb

thats what i was thinking. Deads seem like a very functional lift. Building up muscle and endurance in this lift will be a great carry over to other things. I cant wait to deadlift again

Deadlifts I love em! Once and awkward exercise Now my favorite exercise! Not to mention deadlifting day is the highlight of my week! More fun then biceps and even bench day! hehe Love Em! Why else would I spend 7 hours training back haha
