Dogs: Akitas

I wanna get a new puppy soon and i think ive decided onan Akita, they are awesome, look like a bear, strong as hell, one of the most intelligent dogs, also will protect its family fearlessly, very clean also, cat like almost, they were bread by the shoguns in japan or the samurai for hunting elk and bears, then they were eventually bred into dog fighting which i cant stand, but none the less they are bad mofos! what do yall think and what kind of pets do u like? i also had 2 pitbulls

ive owned one and the wife is a vet and if you have a family its a poor choice, the arent very patient and will likely bite your kids or their friends or somebody, great guard dog, poor family pet, ours had to be put down because she bit one of my friends, until that incident not even a sign of aggression unless you came around at night.

I love akitas. My buddy had one in college. And it bit my fucking girlfriend. When she came crying to me I said "Did you do something to provoke it?". "Um, it had something in its mouth that I was trying to get out". "Good job, genius".

It was a sweetheart, but turned at random times. Last I heard they had to put it down cause it bit a child in Jersey.

Haven't had a dog in a long time. Have had 2 in my life- a golden retriever (dumbest, sweetest dog ever) who had to be put down cause he had seizures and a german shep/doberman combo who was completely insane and eventually had to be put down cause she got cancer.

I'd really like one now but I travel too damn much

i like dogs more than people. i won't say any breed is better than another, just congradulate you on making a decision that will make you happy for many years to come.......feed him quality food, something with beef or chicken as the main ingridient...

I have a boxer. I like akitas but one almost killed me when I was working for a vet. Good dog but got violent if you tried to give him a shot.

Well i love dogs. I have owned a few different breeds. I used to breed pits. Those are my favorite dogs in the whole world i dont care what anyone here says they are very intelligent and i had up to six at my house at one point in time i have two kids never had a problem with them around my kids. My sister has 4 right now and she has a little baby girl. And her dogs are good around her daughter also. Ive heard that akita's are not a very family friendly pet, but you have to look at it like this its all about ownership responsibility's take away any chances that something could go wrong and you will have less problems. I know people want to be able to train their dogs to walk with no leash and this and that big mistake. Always have your pet on a leash remember they are an animal and they have animal instinct's no matter how much you domesticate an animal they still have the ability to bite or attact. Its all in the owner and how he/she handle's their pet. Never leave your children around any pet unattended no matter how much you trust them. i trusted my dogs around my kids that dont mean i would leave them alone in the room to play with by them selves. I always was around when i pets were around my children. Dont train your dog to attack they will have a natural instinct to protect his/her family if need be this is why i love the pitbull breed. They protect their yard and they protect their family. I hope this helps you really do some research on any puppy your going to get before you do so your ready. That is a very big breed your thinking about just something to think about. Ironcheif1984

yes they are known 2 be aggresive towards other people, but for their family they would never attack and would die for, they consider their family the ones they r rasied with from a puppy, so the only people i want it 2 be loyal to and not bite is me and her :-)

Bad choice. Why do people want to own dangerous animals is beyond me. That animal will likely bite someone not related to you and have to be put down. I hate dogs. I've still got a bad scar where I was bitten by a friend's dog.

you lost me at well. Break it up a bit

boxers are smart obediant and look mean as hell. I love boxers

Boxers are great. Im on my third one, all very different but all great dogs. My last 2 didnt live very long. 1st one was 9 when he had to be put down (brain cancer) 2nd one was only 6 (lymphoma). I hope I get more time with this one.

I have had 2 boxers. I had to give my youngest one to a friend because he kept trying to kill my other boxer. He does great at her house but he's the only dog she has. My vet told me I had to find him a home with no other dogs. He said it wasn't something that could be fixed with training. I still go visit him.
The boxer i have is great.

Lol. I think this thread is about Akitas.... but the boxers are taking over....
i think ur right damn u, i was lookin for a good akita breeder :P
what pisses me off is all the champion breeders online spay/neuder their puppies, well wouldnt this effect the overall size of the male? if im spending top money for a champ i want him 2 have his nuts and get as big as he can

Akitas are very handsome animals, no doubt. But they are a product of selective breeding, as such, you've got certain hardwiring that is part and parcel to their nature.

I really like this article by the Akita Rescue Society.

http://www.akitarescue.com/Facts about Akitas.htm

One thing I can tell you about animal rescue, generally speaking the information on breed temperment is a little more honest, I want to say? reliable (they don't sugar coat it, that's what I'm trying to say) from rescue societies versus breeders or even the AKC. They see the full spectrum, and they see the reasons pedigreed animals get dumped.

I do remember hearing Akitas needing to be the only dog in the house somewhere else, and apparently it doesn't matter if the dog is raised with the other dogs. It's the nature of the breed. Some breeds just do not do well in a multidog household.
