do you clip your dogs nails? or have a groomer do it? i haven't taken my buddy to see a groomer in like a year and his nails are super long. i'm kinda apprehensive about doing it myself, cuz i know he can wind up bleeding like a stuck pig if i fuck up....

My wife and I clip our dogs nails because to get him into anywhere around here you need like two weeks in advance on the days we want him groomed. So we just bought a pair of clippers for his nails and cut them ourselves.

Dremels work pretty slick once once you get them used to the idea.

Use doggy clippers if you do it yourself. I'm assuming your dogs nails are black, and you can't see the vein. I have the groomer do my dogs nails when he gets haircuts, but I've had short haired dogs that I didn't have groomed, and I used to do it myself for them. If they have grown out pretty long, the vein gets longer too. Don't try to do too much at once. Just cut them back a little one time per week. The vein usually ends right where the nail starts to bend downward. Have some styptic on standby if you accidentally do nip a vein.

Any Petco stores around? They'll do it cheap. You really should take care of it though, it might be causing him or her some discomfort with them being so long.

Just cut the very tip off. Since his nails are probably black, you can't see the blood inside. Just play it safe and you'll be ok.

I did a few times on my German Shepards, until I cut to close and eeekkk the bleeding. I contacted the breeder to see how he did them and he suggested filing them. It worked great.

he's like a 140 lb. rottweiler. this won't be easy.

they have stuff you can put on the nail if you get a little too far into the good stuff.

This is correct ^^^ I use a rotery drum on a dremel tool for my boxers .

They jump up onto a grooming table and sit there with a very intentive look on their face , i think the vibration from the tool is very weird for them ...

If there white nails there easy you can see the veins..Black use the rule half of the length is were the vein starts. If its been awhile since they have been cut.Take a quarter cut off then walk them a while on a road surface it will ware them down faster...Wait 2 weeks cut a quater repeat..till you get a shortness to half then simple walks and a monthing cut its all good...

thanks bors, i love my dog. i just am never around half the time, i have to leave him with family & my ex occassionally......
