Dog breeders in Texas

I'm planning on getting a dog soon. I had wanted an English Bull Dog, but can't see spending more than $1k on a dog that'll most likely die within 8 years. So I decided on a Pit Bull. Do any of you know any good breeders in the area? I don't need a show quality dog, I want a good family dog. Thanks.

Austin, though I don't mind traveling to pick up a dog. And havoc, I've spent hours on the internet, but lots of breeders don't have web sites. Granted, I probably won't use one who doesn't.

Seems to me there's known breeder in Ft. Worth.
I wish I had more details. But maybe narrow your search.
Good luck.......

I understand, you want a reputable breeder, guess you have checked the Austin paper?

The Austin paper is a sack of shit, but yes.
Bro, well then the only thing I can think of is attending a dog show somewhere near you and talking to the breeders at the show, good luck. peace

My family had the same problem in locating a quality mini schnauzer. My mom contacted the american kennel club and asked for their list of breeders in our state. She called around until she found the right dog from a reputable breeder (she'd bred that line of schnauzers since the last 50's).

A Pit Bull????? As a family dog?????? You're joking, right?

A BULLDOG is a lovely pet. a PIT BULL is a breed developed mainly for fighting, known to be short-tempered, not good around kids, and downright dangerous.

AFAIK you need a special licence to own one over here.

I wuold recommend a German Shepherd, if you are willing to take the time to train it properly - unless you firmly make sure they know you are boss and take them to training once or twice a week for several months when you first get them, they can have a nasty dominant streak. Or a golden Retriever. These last are very nice.

Get in touch with the Kennel Club about breed associations. Also, your local branch of the SPCA will be able to tell you the same.

PM me. I know a breeder in CA that ships.

I think she charges 700 for pet quality.

Do it yourself. Just make sure you put a muzzle on it first. Trust me, I'm from Arkansas and we have it down to a science.

Common misconceptions. Pit Bulls are very protective, good with children, and have a high pain tollerance (so they'll put up with kids). Pits generally only display aggression towards other animals. They are NOT human killers.

*ANY* breed of dog that does get socialized properly is aggresive, even retrievers.

If properly socialized, as a puppy, pitbulls are good pets. Don't expect it to be very bright though, they are considered the second least intelligent breed.

Different breeds of dogs do have different temperaments.

Thats a given. But any dog can be trained to adjust temperament slightly.

Pitbulls just have a bad rep. Yes they are aggressive. They shouldn't be your first choice for a family dog unless you have worked with them before.

Code, do you have any info backing up your claim that pits are that dumb? I've spent a lot of time with pits and other dogs and I just don't see that. Hell, through my experience they are very quick learners and are right up there with standard Poodles, German Sheppards etc.

Citrusgirl...... please do a little more research before you post misconceptions.

Some info on Pits...

Sorry my bad.

Anyway, pity you couldn't get a bulldog, they are really cute.

ps Get a Great Pyrenees - my gran had one of these and it needed a garden shed for a kennel.... when it stoof up against the gate on his hind legs he was 7-8 feet high teeheehee.

THe neighbourhood kids used to queue up to bring him for a walk...

lol. I'd love to get a huge dog, but they don't fit so well in apartments, or in Texas heat for that matter.

Spent,

Make sure your apartment complex will allow pits. Mine wont, it pissed me off so I'm thinking of a chihuahua or a miniature pinscher. Hey midgets make good pets!! BTW I hope the pit eats your ass in your sleep. lol

I hadn't thought about asking them, and I don't think I will. It wasn't stated in our lease, so it shouldn't be a problem. There are lots of BIG dogs here, for what it's worth. Oh, yeah, fuck you too. :)

I did some more research....

It seems that what the press call "Pit bulls" over here in the UK is a specific sub-breed of bull terrier bred just for aggressiveness and for fighting. Whereas other bull terriers, including most sub-breeds of pit bull, are fine. I should have checked this out more befoer posting.

Anyway, Great Pyrenees is the one :). I can hear you ordering that garden shed and 2-acre yard now :).

If all you want is a good family dog, why are you searching for fancy-pants breeders? Get a Border Collie, Golden, Lab. But the best, most amiable dog by far as a general rule is a Beagle.

I don't think the words "pit bull" and "family dog" have ever been in the same sentence. Unless it was something like:

"Remember that pit bull that ate our family dog?"

Spent...

keep your ears open in a few days. She is out of town for the weekend. But right now my friend Chris said she has 3 puppies and know where there are about 15 more!
