Does dressing 'Preppy' make me vain?

®ª† said:
I know I'm a bit vain .... everyone is in a way (otherwise we wouldn't use mirrors.

Anywho, my friends say that I come across as being vain by dressing preppy. I don't consider it dressing preppy as much as dressing well. I get most of my clothes from Hollister (I like the look). The only thing I'm worried about is whether or not this is a turn off to girls ... What do girls usually think of a well-dressed guy?

"oooh ... he's dressed so nicely. He must be an ass"

or

"oooh ... I like what he's wearing. He looks good"

Hollister is inexpensive, so I wouldn't consider that vain at all. However, I teach high school in a suburban school and Hollister and Abercrombie is what the kids I teach wear, and it was all the frat boys wear in college, so it's a little young-ish, in my opinion. (Although I'm not sure how old you are so that may suit you.) But even if you were wearing all designer stuff, that wouldn't be vain, it would be hot...as long as you don't spend more than me :) (That's hard to do though!)

If dressing preppy is vain, vanity is my favorite sin :)

Hollister is "inexpensive"?

Anywho ... It may be "young-ish" but I like the clothes and people tell me that I always dress nicely (btw, I'm 20). I'm going to the mall later on this week with a $200 budget. I need to get some more clothes for this upcoming school year.

I wear Old Navy t-shirts though :-X

I have some tips for getting the most you can out of money for clothes...

1. Vintage trainers/sneakers...many of these are the bomb and can be had very cheaply. I got a great pair for 6 bucks the other day.

2. For jeans, ebay. Go to a nordstrom or other nice store and find out what your size is, and then buy that pair on ebay. Many pants on e-bay are literally half the price or less, brand new.

3. TJ Maxx, every once in awhile you'll strike gold in that store. Worth visiting once a month or so.

4. Thrift stores, you can get some awesome t-shirts, shoes and belts here, and occasionally find other prizes.

Other than that, I really do like to use e-bay or internet retailers for a lot of shopping, you just gotta make sure they're not fakes (I've been burned before).

Hollister is inexpensive bro. Their target audience is highschool students.

I'm 20 as well. I use ebay alot, especially for shirts. Debaser had a good post.

Vain is the way you should be, when people say you are vain then you have succeed because vain for most of the people is someone who cares about clothes and how he/she look. And alot of people who complain on vain is these people who wont to be god dressed and look god but they dont want to spend that time and money to succeed.

So i think you just should take their complin on vain like a compliment, that you are dressed god. Alot of my friends make jokes about how vain iám and how much clothes i buy and stuff like that but then they come to me and like "hey what you think about this sweater i bought and hey can ju come with me to the city i will bought some clothes"

If you want to stick with the preppy look, go to a store like JCrew. It's a step or two up from Hollister/Abercrombie type stores, so a classic young adult/adult look (without dressing mom or dad-ish!) Their clothes are quality and still not terribly pricey, especially if you know when to hit up their in-store and online sales. Get the basics there, supplement that with a few designer pieces and some vintage stuff, and you're good to go.
