does anyone know much about laptop hard drives?

i think i've fucking done it now. my laptop won't start up, because the HD can't be found. on boot up, i can hear this unusual clanking/scraping noise coming from the area where the drive is. upon removing the disk, i can hear something loose in there, but don't have a screwdriver to remove the top plate.

is it possible to fix something like this? or is the drive fucked? i want a new laptop anyway, but i'd like to get some data off this one first.

Drive is in all likely hood fucked up.

If you have another laptop available, swap the hard drives and see if either of them boot to make sure it is the drive. If the data is that valuable a data recovery company can get the data off the drive, but it will cost ya $$$$..

i doubt i'll need that. nothing crucial here, that i can remember. just enough to inconvenience me. and of course there's the usual assortment of mp3s, pr0n, etc...

tell me, do you know of a way to remove the faceplate on the HD? the screws are tiny and have 6 notches on the head for a different type of screw driver. is there any way to get them off and look underneath, just to see what's loose? without prying it off, of course.

dont do that. if even a tiny bit of dust gets in the platter is fairly well dead. you cant win this one

i'm not trying to win it. call it curiosity. if it's dead anyway, i have nothing to lose.

but forget that...

does anyone know where i could get a replacement HD suitable for an inspiron 8000? on ebay i can get one for around 100 bucks total, but if there's a standard configuration which fits many laptops, and that i can get for less money, i'd like to know.

any input is appreciated.

You need a small set of torx drivers for that. There are usually screws hidden under labels as well.

Regardless of the dust the drive will run for awhile - i have ran them open before Trust Me. But it won't last long, the only reason to open it is to get your data off. The drive will be broke.

Oh, and you won't be able to fix it even if you open it. You probably won't see anything physically wrong. The recovery companies normally remove the platers and put them in their own devices.

LOL... It will cost you a good penny to get the data recovered from the HDD
if at all as it has crashed.. Imagine the read/write head flying over the metal HDD platter and like an airplane it has smashed into it grinding away the data.

Maybe some of the data is still there but is it worth a couple hundred $ ?

Lesson learned.. Weekly backups..
