does anyone have a blu-ray burner?

New member
i really, really need one...or a raid-5 setup.

i have to backup A LOT of data, and i don't want to go out and buy another 500 gig HD, because this is getting ridiculous.

a double layer blu-ray disc holds 50 gigs, and that could make life very easy.

anyone have one...or better yet, a cost effective way to backing up data?

I've been in the dark...50GB is a ton. Didn't know they could hold that much. damn.

Imagine how nice it will be when the prices on them come down.

you can buy a burner unit for the computer for around $500 (check ebay)
but the media discs arent cheap! $20 for a 25gb disc. 50gb discs are quite expensive and hard to find, since they are difficult to produce.
DVDs are cheaper considering cost per gigayte.
Or just a bunch of hard drives.

Your most cost effective way to store shit is going to be slapping hard drives (IDE) into an old machine. Waaaaaaaaaaaay cheaper the DVD/Blu ray at cost/meg of storage.

i had one of my 200 gig externals shit the bed, so i am kinda wary about external drives.

i dont have any more room to put external drives in on my desktop anymore. plus, the thing is old as hell - it's my laptop that is big pimpin'

Buy a cheap ass machine off of ebay that has 4 IDE channels on it.... I wouldn't use onboard raid - use software raid w/linux if you want to go the RAID route. I already have one 1 TB server doing that - will probably stand up another one soon.

could i do that with my own desktop if i take out the cd and dvd burners? i've never put more than 2 hd's in a machine.

i dont understand how you could possibly use 500 gb?

Let's see... I take lots of pics... I can easily blow through 30 gig a day.

Any DVD that enters this house is ripped - my kids have scratched up waaaaaay to many of them. I rip a high quality version and a lower sized divx rip. I'm also begging to rip a smaller sized one for PSP.... those 3 rips end up being about 2-5 gigs worth of stuff. Those rips come in might handy for 4 month deployments and watching shit on laptops.

Before I bought a DirectTivo I rolled my own with MythTV - recorded television adds up mucho fast.

It adds up fast.

Depends how many IDE channels are on the mobo. One of my machines has 4 IDE channels on it. I threw 4x250gig drives in there.

I'm living on the edge with that one - no raid right now.

My important shit (pictures) is backed up on 3 different machines using rysnc over the network. Unfortunately I'm growing out of that... so I'm going to move to a more robust server with raid on it. RAID isn't a cure all, but for what I'm going to need it for it will work - when I buy the drives for it, I'll buy enough for spares in case one shits the bed. I'll just do software raid for it. Haven't had the time to put everything together yet. Maybe over x-mas if I take some vacation time.

you have a psp? if your kids have a nintendo DS, i have something you might want for them.

I got my son a PSP for x-mas...I'm looking at what needs to be done to hack it :) It will be fun to mess with. Hell, *I* want a PSP for the hackability.

He does have a DS but I haven't messed with that yet.

I've got one self chipped X-box and I need to get off my ass and softmod my other X-box

why dont you just use clonedvd to copy your movies? even when it compresses the movie significantly, i cant notice a change in quality at all.

anydvd + clonedvd is the killer combo.

i use either cloneDVD or DVDshrink - havent had to use cloneDVD yet

what program do u use to rip dvd's into divx?
just curious

Variety of programs.... I'm not picky. For a long time I was running Linux on this desktop and I can't remember what mish mash of shit I used to rip it.

I put XP on here... I think I've been using Magic DVD lately.

my gf bought a ds-xtreme chip for her DS, and the thing is fucking kick ass. it plays all of the roms out there, with zero incompatibility issues or save problems. it fits in flush in the DS game slot, and hooks up via USB.

the thing is fucking bad ass. it's only downside is it is 512 MB...but that's still like 10 games at once.

i, being the awesome boyfriend i am, got her all 735 DS games.

i'm not sure what the psp needs to be hacked other than it has to have a certain serial / model number in order for the firmware to be flashed to allow downloaded games to be played.

every fucking psp game on the market is on demonoid.

Excellent. I should do that but all my energies will be directed to getting that new PSP up and tweaked once Santa delivers it.

Yeah, it all rolls around firmware versions so we shall see.

i tried finding a DS emulator a while back and havent been able to find one that works on my pc. I want to play the remake of Mario :(

Very awesome feature that the DS can play all the roms out there.

Plus the PSP will play movies, so he'll be stoked when I throw Star Wars stuff on the memory card.

BTW, I had an XBOX 360 in my shopping cart today.... thought about it then put it back on the shelf.

yeah, the ds xtreme doesnt have to use patched roms or any weird settings like the other chips like g6 or supercard need. it is as simple as putting them on the cip via usb and popping it in the ds.

it fucking rocks.

and yes, the new mario is AWESOME.

the xbox 360 mod chips dont allow you to use xbox live...so be wary.

Micro center has an $80 rebate on the WD 500 GB SATA drive. Bringing $210 down to $130.

I'm formatting mine for the 2nd time right now. I spend 20% of my life with computer problems.

oh yeah, i suggest you begin downloading the psp roms now, so once you have it figured out, you can pick and choose which games to put on there.

better put grand theft auto on there for him.

bwhaha
i was with a friend of mine that did that on two different occassions.
the last time he bought one along with Gears of War

Yeah, saw that. We haven't done any xbox live gaming in the house. The only live we have is every f-ing neighborhood kid over here in front of the 60 inch TV

what you could do is hookup an old junk computer to your tv, get quickplay, and play every game for NES, SNES, n64, sega genesis, gameboy, gameboy advance, gamegear, playstation 1, and MAME with a single click.

it's quite badass.

It's more than 20%

Had a MAME machine hooked up a loooong time ago. Now I use the x-box to do that :) Lots 'o emulators on that machine.

That's the problem - I want to get the 360 to play GOW... but if I play it, mini-me is going to want to play it and my wife is going to get pissed off at me if I let that happen. Hell, she got the beak when we were playing Halo against each other. So I need to wait until he is a wee bit older (he's 6)

did she have any objections to grand theft auto?

nevermind, i just saw the commercial

a commercial for quickplay? uh, it's probably something different.

quickplay is just a program that automatically launches the correct emulator and plays the rom in it's zipped format, so you can save space on your hd. it's quite bad ass.

jnuts said:
Take a guess - I didn't even try that one.

women... my gf says if we ever had kids, she would definitely not let me let them play games like that or listen to the music i like.

apparently she doesnt think Saw is an appropriate kids movie. damn hippy.

I don't even play games to often - I'm to fucking busy with work. I play some stuff with mini-me. The modded xboxs were mostly to play movies and games for the midgets.

Newsflash on the electronics front... my wife wants a Wii.

I wish she told me this on launch day. Now I'm trying to find one were I don't get raped paying for it.

i got it confused with something else
downloading right meow

How much drive space do you use now? I'm using it up at an alarming rate, even by my standards. 30 gig a day at horse shows adds up fast

I couldn't hazard a good guess. Many computers.....many hard drives.

Reason I don't update photos on my web page is it would be a month project ... at least.

I'm also a bit down on my future as a photog right now. Several reasons.

all of the wanna-be artists on campus gasp if you are to mention digital photography.

you aren't shit unless you are using either some banged up hunk of crap for the 40's or using some ultra cam that costs as much as a car.

p0ink said:
i thought most photographers do their best to stay away from digital??

Digital stores analog data on square pixels. Film stores the same data on irregularly shaped film grain.

Digital surpassed 35mm film some years ago.

There are always diehards.

I enjoy the many benefits of digital....there are dozens. But you forfeit your life doing photoshop and burning and duplicating and emailing etc.

People thinks it all must be fun.

It is quite expensive to stay on top of things...as you can imagine.

Those "artists" never make it in photography...which is strictly a business. More competitive than many.

I can safely say that it isn't easy to make a good living in photography.

The rags (winter) and riches (summer) takes its toll.....the rags do anyway.

what do the photography students end up doing? all of the pictures i have ever seen by them always involved some trivial item photographed from every conceivable angle with every available lens they had.

and then they would try to tell me just what it 'meant', which was always a load of shit.

I had an asst who was great with a camera but didn't have a clue otherwise.

She was taking EMT class...last I heard. Thinking of nursing.

What a waste of a photog degree.

A lot of people have good camera skills. Its the business skills that they lack.

Photog is a tough business. You have one opportunity to nail an irreplaceable image.

The lighting sucks and you have very little time as a rule.

you can have up to 4 hard drives in ANY computer. all modern desktops come with 2 IDE ports, meaning you can have up to 4 devices.
its just that most computers have 1 or 2 cd/dvd drives installed. So, you are correct that you'd need to take out the cd and dvd burners to use the extra ide ports.

If you buy an IDE expansion PCI card, you can plug in even more devices. Of course assuming your computer case can hold them all and you have a good enough power supply to run them, and keep the drives/case from overheating.
