Dodgy powder / MP test????

I need to test some Var powder (from a new source) but I'm not sure how to do it as Var has a high MP (235 deg C) and I can't use a 'normal' thermometer and boiling water?? Any ideas?

Anyone got any other info on how to check my Var powder - I've played with it before, but cant really remember that much about it (appearance,smell etc)
