Do think personal trainers should have somew sort of developed physicue(sp) The new trainer at my local gym looks to be maybe 130lb tops. Now im not saying his weights an issue i just mean hes tiny.Doesnt look like hes touched a weight in his life. Now im sure hes well educated in the field.I would just like to have someone who looks like they they know what there doing.Im i alone on this.

Being "in shape" or "fit" isn't the same for everyone. To some (most on this board - myself included), being in shape is being pretty muscular, low to semi-low bodyfat, and a six-pack. But, to some it's just being healthy internally. Having a good heart, lungs, and circulatory system. Having low cholesterol and BP.

One of my exercise science profs looks like a beanpole, but he runs marathons, lifts weights, and knows more about exercise than pretty much anyone on this board. He's in great shape. To him, the bodybuilding look isn't what he wants.

You don't have to be a mini version of Ronnie Coleman to know your shit.

If you ask me being a personal trainer is all about image, you have to look the part. You don't want some fat ass training you and telling YOU how to lose weight.

thats basically what im saying.

well then i agree with you, they might be educated but i would want somebody with personal experience, maybe ex-bodybuilder who can say do this because it worked for me. How could a skinny ass or fat ass be that interested in weight lifting/bodybuilding but not workout that much? Doesn't make sense to me.

Do you know how many clients are interested in bodybuilding? Not that many. Many of them just want to get their cholesterol or BP down. Many just want to feel better or lose a few pounds. You don't have to be a former Mr. Olympia (or a look-a-like) to be a good trainer.

Often gyms or clubs don't want someone who looks like the Hulk as their personal trainers. The really big or ripped people tend to intimidate the customers. And you are right, most people either were told to get a trainer by their doc for some purpose or are just trying to get in shape (which amounts to someone giving them a routine and spending the next 6 weeks counting reps & listening to complaints about how much it hurts, how sore they were and how much they crave chocolate.

I couldn't agree more with Dixieman and Sassy! Being a personal trainer is NOT about being as big as a house. If you are considering hiring a personal trainer and YOU want to be big as a house, then you probably want to go with someone who has walked that path.

However, as the others have said, most people who are hiring trainers are not trying to become bodybuilders, and that "look" does tend to scare off potential clients who don't want to look like that, especially women.

Personally, I run a fairly lean 175-180 phyisque, and I am 5' 8". I have decent muscle mass, but I am not "huge", nor will I ever be, because I just don't want that look. However, I do like the muscles that I have, and I keep my own bodyfat under control. So, whenever females are looking for a personal trainer, unless they want to become a bodybuilder, they will always seek out someone who has the "look" that they want.

Why would you go into Hot Topic at the mall if you were looking for a suit and a tie???
