do you squat as low as Tom Platz?

do you go as low as he does in that vid of him doing 500 for 20 reps?

I'm thinking I need to use less weight and now go lower to build the glutes..
thanks

Platz is from my area and era ... I have seen him squat and it is amazing.

I have tried to get down that low and it simply doesn't happen. He is about 5' 6" and I am over 6' with long legs. My butt will not hit my calves.

I like to come down to a bench that is a few inches below parallel ... or do a leg press with my knees hitting my chest.

i do......really drop the weight as thats what i had to do..scaled all the way back to 135 although it was easy i felt it necessary to develop the "FULL" technique.....now hitting 405 for 3's after my initial sets of 2x5 with 5lb jumps everyother week......good luck....forgot to add dont let it mind fuck ya either dropping that much weight, some people with egos that cant fit through the front door give up way to quick cuz its not heavy enough

I have for many years, with some pretty respectable weight.....After this last knee injury though Im sticking with parallel from here on out.

yes, I always use a full ROM. Im 6'2 but i maintain my flexibility in my hip flexors so I can get the benefit from full squats

I do..........with no belt / no wraps. being a retired power lifter it was hard to give up the support gear (did it about 6 years ago) but now I think it is the best mod I ever did for my lifting routine.

I thought Smith was the devil.

sorry I dont think so

You can get great leg development from leg Presses and Smith Machine Squat.

I am a Bodybuilder not powerlifter:)

I met Tom in Conn. back in the 80's...he was straight forward no bull shit...and since then ive buried everything...i've squated 740 for my best single, suit and wraps since i was a powerlifter...

Id also do reps with 505 it was an easy 10 for me...my legs were 30" on the right and 30 1/2" on the left.....

I cannot say enough about his way of training...

Tom was a psychopath when it came to leg work.
I talked to Dorian one time about Tom. Yaes said when he first came over to the states he saw platz train legs. Yates got discouraged saying if that was the type of intesnsity it took to make it as a pro BBer then he couldnt do it.
Thats saying something!!! :worried:

I think it's worth going as deep as your flexibility allows you

I'm long legged at 6'2". I'm doing what Boops is talking about and dropping the weight and going all the way down. I feel silly only using 205, but I'm working on it. For whatever reason I find that I don't build as much muscle around the knee/ lower thigh if I don't squat low. Some say that the weight shifts to the butt and hips at the bottom. But, I think everyone is built somewhat different. I just did legs yesterday going ass to calf and my glutes aren't the least bit sore, though my thighs are.

trust me bro you'll be so happy you changed it up and it wont take long before the weights go up....its a nie accomplishment (at least to me) to hit 405 ass to my calves and then watch some fool do a 1/4 rep with 500 screaming the whole time.....as for the ass being sore comment which would you rather big legs or a big ass lol....keep it up bro and good luck :)

Tom Platz was my first role model in bodybuilding just because of his legs.I always love to train legs and squat ass to calf.Regardless of how much weight you use people will look when you squat deep!!

i do full squats. just like i do full bench presses and full everything else. anyone doing 21's in the squat? i do them with db shoulder presses, pretty tough....

Was working on the 100rep squat until knee problems started again.Maybe getting it replaced this time.I hate not getting to work legs!!!!!!!

Oh, no. I'm right with you there. I was saying that was something I'm happy about. A lot of guys complain that full squats work the ass too much. So, I'm pleasantly suprised to find the opposite is true in my case.

For me, it's competition that drives me to have more complete legs. In April this year I competed and the only other guy in the lght heavies had huge thighs! Mine are not the best, but looked totally out of whack next to him. Next time, I want to be better prepared.

If you have trouble going Ass To The Grass in your squats there is a body weight only exercise that will get you there in no time. It;s called a post squat. You stand with all your weight on one leg. Cross the other legs over the weighted leg and squat all the way down. This is as much a balance exercise as as a strength exercise.. Because the unweighted leg is in front it can't help you stand up. SO once at the bottom, and I mean bottom like shiting in the woods bottom stand up and repeat. Do this for twenty reps on each legs.

Twenty years ago, when I was older then most people on this board I did five sets of twenty on each leg every day for warmup before class.

When most people say they can't get that low it's not a strength or flexability problem but a balance problem. Do this exercise every day, yea the legs recover quick, and see if it doesn't help after a couple of weeks. Pretty soon you will be ass to grass all the time with no knee problems at all.

ass to the floor squats gave me tendinitis of the pubic symphasis, its called osteitis pubis. its about an inch above the genitals, the tendon that attaches at the center of your pelvis. radiated pain into my left nut for 6 months, thought i was dying. be careful and listen to your hips and pelvis. if its too low dont push it.
