Do you pray...

Do you pray...
I have prayed before my first set of every workout for the past MANY years. It becomes a quiet moment for me where I ask for a few things....

1) I say thanks for all the gifts in my life

2) Ask for help, to keep me strong, keep me safe, keep me working hard again.

3) Lead, guide, and direct me in my daily life.

I know that my workout partner has also started praying before his hard set...mostly just saying Thanks for being able to get up out of bed and be able to do what we do...and for strength to not quit.

I guess that I have always looked at what my gifts are as a gift from God..and if I don't use it to the max...it would be a sin. Anyone else feel this way???

Anyone else pray before they lift?

Anyone else have any 'different' preworkout things that they do?

B True

I pray to the Iron Gods before every set. Of course they include the Squat God, the Deadlift God, and the all powerful God of Pain

I always pray before I lift. I ask God to watch over my friends and family. I ask Him to forgive my sins. I thank Him for the day. I thank Him for the opportunity to lift weights this day, and I pray that what I do in the gym helps me to grow bigger and stronger, is glorious in His eyes, and brings to glory to His kingdom.

I pray again afterwards, pretty much the same prayer, just thanking Him for the opportunity to work out, and praying that what I did was glorious in His eyes.

And by glorious, I mean me being covered in blood and puke stains, lol.

You know b I can honestly say that in the gym I have never prayed before a set but now that you have brought it to my attention I will make that a priority in my lifting. God is my foundation, my strength and my heart....there is no reason not to ask him for help!!!!!!!!!!!!! Thanks for the great words of wisdom.

that was deep.....It makes me wonder how much stronger i can be if i were closer to God. Maybe i need to start going to church again.

That is sooooo close to exactly what I say....

I pray before and after I lift.Im probably far off from the real meaning of the song, but I really like the Disturbed song,Prayer, when he says"this is the way I pray"....For me personally, that means that everyone has there own way of talking to God.....people speak through alot of different things...as cheesy as it sounds,I think alot of us pray(say thank you) through what we love to do,and one of those things for me is training.....
"I guess that I have always looked at what my gifts are as a gift from God..and if I don't use it to the max...it would be a sin. Anyone else feel this way???" I definitely agree.

Although born jewish I'm nonreligious, so I don't pray. But when the weights get heavy I have a brief moment of focus and visualization. I think it accomplishes the same thing but minus the religious aspect.

Sometimes I pray and thank God I have the privilege of working out, exercising and improving myself. I consider it a privilege, not an obligation, to fight against the earth itself for the control of iron.

Nice thread.

Considering that God is the all knowing creator of our bodies, then it's a great idea to talk with Him about what we are doing to try and improve them. After all, He knows them a lot better than we ever will.

I agree with what B said about using your talents to His glory. If you are working out for the right reasons, then you will get much more out of it. Not just physically, but emotionally and spiritually as well.
...chad...

wow... i never even thgouht about praying. I am really not religious, but I think you guys just turned me... at least for the moment. Right now, after reading those words, i feel a real connection with God. I think I will start praying before I lift now.
Thanks

Pray? Why should I pray for anything? I am responsible for everything I accomplish, not a "higher" power.

-sk

As I do not belong to the judeo-christian ethic of religion I don't pray per se. I do focus and reflect on things quite frequently. Also reciting the viking warriors prayer helps me get in the right mental focus for a big lift.

Cheers,

Remember my sanctuary ? :)

{this is Exodus}

to my disgrace i have fallen away from GOD more recently than i would like to admit. but i do pray. sometimes i pray in formal, starting off addressing GOD like a letter, but to me that sometimes seems impersonal. so when i get real, and i belive that HE can hear me, i talk more like i do with my wife. i try to be as honest and forthcoming as possible. the only thing that gets inbetween my path of GOD is my own ego.

i prayed at the music city strongman, and i have since started back, so thanks B, for reminding a fellow believer.

Yeah I feel that. I just thank God for the opportunity to work hard, but I know that it's all on me once the bar is unracked.

Do you have proof of this God? I sure don't.

Wonderful thread B.

I pray many times a day. I've never prayed directly before my first set, but I pray that God will help me with my fitness goals. I pray that he will keep be safe, injury free, motivated, help me learn and grow.

I pray for many things in my life and have been blessed in many ways as well. For me, prayer if a very powerful thing.

Sk......thats the part of having faith. I would type out a little story my neighbor told me. Hes not one to make stuff up or lie but I know it would have no effect on your beliefs....and its a lot to type out hahahah

Hilucination? Probability?

There are endless explanations, but none of them have to do with an invisible man in the sky.

Actually, this thread somewhat offends me, but whatever ...

B Fold,

Always before big lifts and if I remember(not to excited) I always make the lift. I only pray for one thing when I go for a big lift though, to do it injury free. All my firsts, 300, 400, 500 on the bench, 600 and 700 on the deadlift and I pray especially hard and focused before squatting. The squat always scares me, and in strongman contests I always pray before almost every event.

Then don't read it.

Two thing's I was told would always start an arguement were Politics and Religion, always.

This religion thing happens way too often on the chat forum. Live and let live, gentlemen and ladies

not sure I believe in a God, or one that is not indifferent to us.

so no I don't pray.
-----

It is interesting, thoughk, that a lot of strong men are very religous. Doc Squat for one and many many others.

Sports Restoration and Massage mentions a blip about using religion as a means for recovery even, but I am not very far into it yet; there will probably be more on this later on in the book.

The mind is a powerful thing.

i prayed last night for things to go well today and for no injuries. i'm not sure i believe or not, but it makes me a little more confident.

That makes no sence and you know it. If someone made a racist thread (or something of the sort) it would have been locked or deleted ...

Whatever ...

Just cause it made you confident it doesn't mean anything. Deep down you believe a higher power exists so when you worship it you get self-confidence.

Believe it or not, but look at the world ... as time progresses more and more people drop religion as they become smarter.

If this offends someone, than don't read it (hope that one works here spatts).

it does mean something. it made me feel better

Weren't you the one who said "thank you"?

Well if you don't like it than don't read it. Go pray and tell god to shut me up so you don't have to hear me again.

jeremys,

That's good that it made you feel better, but not for the reasons you think.

I really like all of you guys from the training perspective, and B Fold specially you too, but this thread is riddiculous.

I think these were very wise words:

Hmm, the more I learn and the smarter I get, the MORE I believe in God.

The belief in a higher power greatly makes the person weaker and whoever they pollute with the belief.

Thats funny, because all the people that I know that truly believe, are very strong people...inside and out.

Belief in a higher power, right. Do you not know who HE is? And, YOU'RE making remarks about my intelligence! Oh yeah, I'm far from weak so look elsewhere when making those silly general statements!

ZGzaZ said:

exactly, so how do you define it?

Relative to mental strength: Belief of self power, not of "someone" else.

ie The belief that the mind is powerful not a man in the sky.

-sk

ZGzaZ said:
who said anything about a "Man" in the "sky"???

That's just an expression, everyone has their own distorted defenition of "god." Then there are those who believe in themselves.

ZGzaZ said:
aright sk, lets agree to disagree....of course im not going to change your beliefs, and of course youre not going to change mine.

I've changed beliefs before ...

That isn't the point though. The point is that this kind of threads shouldn't be allowed in a public training board discussion for the simple reason of the quote from DBC.

Bfold asked if anyone else prayed, or if you don't, what else do you do preworkout to get mentally ready.

You're a fucking piece of shit. You've posted several times in this thread, and each post is more negative than the previous. Get the fuck off the training forum and go back to the anabolics forum where you belong.

sk* is ungrateful to the people who help him here. Slobber is right, get the fuck off this forum and go do some more insulin

That isn't the impression that I got from this thread, meaning to get "mentally ready."

BTW, really mature. I guess beliefs only go one way eh?

revexrevex,

No I am not ungreatful to people that help me, but this has nothing to do with that.

yes you are ungrateful bro. When a man has been here for years helping countless members with their training, he can post whatever he the fuck wants to

HAHA, WHAT THE FUCK? Do you honestly believe that?

B Fold is great and always helps out everyone, and he is one of the most helpful people on all of elitefitness. BUT, are you telling me I have no right to say anything against what he states?

-sk

Okay, so back to the original topic.....

I do pray before I lift. I ask God for strength, and, if it's His will, that I will get the lift. I also give thanks for the gift of strength that I have.

A good post by you would have been something like "I don't pray preworkout. Instead, I _______________"

And then just leave it at that.

Must have missed that part after just reading the title of the thread. A lot of you don't get it but I view religion much like a black man views the KKK, for personal reasons which I am not about to bring up.

So yea when a thread like this comes up, what do you think I am gonna do?

-sk

i pray before my workouts for strength to complete my workout and not to have any injuries.

-sk

What exactly did I state??? I asked a question and in no way did I say that anyone should pray before they lift...I merely said that 'I' did before I trained...and asked if anyone else had their preworkout rituals...

In now way did I ask ANYONE what their religious beliefs were...and I can't figure out why anyone took it to state their religious beliefs OR to put anyone else down for their beliefs.

If you choose to come on here and put down others...then unplug your keyboard and just scroll through the posts without expressing thoughts. This was a thread to share...not to criticize ANYONE!!!!

If anyone wants to debate prayers...start a thread over on the Chat forum...that is what IT is for!!!

B True

I never do for training, but I do for other purposes. . .

Praying is an excellent communication tool!!! I need to start doing this before training. . .I used to when I competed in sports.

No I don't know it. I won't tollerate a racist thread here, or ANY thread that has nothing to do with training. This thread pertained to training until you arrived. Good work.
