Do you lockout all the way on bench presses or not?

Hey everyone. Was just interested to see if you guys lockout at the top of your bench presses or not. Ive often heard that locking out is like resting at the top. Im sure you can get out more reps by cutting lockouts a little short. Was just interested to see everyones view on the subject. I lockout fully most of the time. ThanX
 
Good point. It depends how I am training, but generaly I lock out at the top, but try to break it as quickly as possible to avoid letting my muscle rest between each rep.

Nice..Im always trying to set PR's, so sometimes Ill hold the weight at lockout for a while when Im fatigued and blast out a few additional reps. Sometimes by cutting the reps a little short it seems I can bang out more reps also. ThanX
 
I never lockout on any press anymore. . I keep constant stress on the muscle.

Essentially, I am using a 3/4 range of motion, but all the stress is directed on the muscle I am training.
 
I always lock out on presses too...that portion of the lift can be VERY weak for me when I get to those last couple of reps.

At some point I'll incorporate some partials to address this, maybe in lieu of some rest-pauses. I think going to failure, rest-pausing, partials, a static AND slow negative would be...heh...a bit much for me :)
 
depends on your goals.

personally if your benching with me, and you dont lock something out, it doesnt count. and im gonna be all over your ass about it till you do! lol.

i lock out fully. since its a compound movement, im training a movement...not a muscle. since im not pec benching, im not looking for constant tension.
 
depends on your goals, if it is a bodybuilding thing then stopping just short of lockout is fine.

if you compete in strongman/powerlifting, not locking out is stupid.
 
I think your question should be 'do you linger at lockout.'

Because if you didn't get to the 'lockout' position, you didn't complete the movement. Not going all the way up is like not going all the way down and kissing those nips.
 
my bb style Bp is a nonstop movement fall extension but no long lockout...constant tension.... my PL BP has a long strong lock out at the top. When your BB it not so much the weight you use, but how you use it.
 
I never lockout on anything. To me, it's dangerous. I think it's always a good thing to keep a slight bend while still going for a quality range of motion.
 
i don't lockout all the way even now. for one...when you lockout continously you risk your elbow joints. use your muscles and keep continous motion going on. its harder..yea..but your stronger this way as well. to me...locking out means that your finished...not resting....:D tb

Im just shy of lockout when i do bench.....Even on squats, Takes a toll on joints.

Just the man I wanted to hear from. Let me ask you this: Should I avoid locking out so I can bang out more reps? And if so, is this legit in your opinion? Thats really what I was trying to get at with this thread.

yea..you should avoid lockin out...makes it harder to bang out those reps..:D
that would be legit in my opinion for reps of course...it would be just locking out for the max singles since its only one rep. tb

Nice! I think your gonna see more reps from me now! I may lockout when Im spent though, just so I can bang out one last rep or two. You know, hold it for a while, catch my breath then blast that shit.

you must wait brotha!! continue to do those lockouts and reps on the bench and speed work for another 3 weeks..then max again. when you do max again..don't train chest that tuesday...prepare yourself for that day. its a tactic brotha!! tb
