do you bench in a cage ?

How many of you bench in a power cage ? I never like to go heavy without it having dropped 245 on my chest about a year ago in a meet. Of course in a meet you're on your own and I find myself sometimes thinking about it. I got a 345 in that rack and don't know if I would have done that without the secure feeling I got in training in it.

There is no power cage at our gym. I am sure it is a secure feeling. Another thing - there is no power cage in a meet... ;)

Isnt it amazing how much more you can lift when you feel secure? ITS ALL IN THE MIND

AT my current new gym I have one, Im gonna take full advantage of it.

I do all the time. I train alone.... :( no powerlifters at my gym.

I dropped 365 once, but it I flattened out and it hit the bars.....
I also dumped 495 on my face, but it hit the bars so I was safe.

I love the power rack!!!!

What's really helped me has been speed bench on DE day. I was never a good bencher, and I'm still not by any means, but speed work had the unexpected benefit of teaching me to control the weight, not letting the weight control me. It's given me the confidence to attempt bigger lifts by improving my focus and my ability to power through sticking points.

I always train in a cage when I bench. I can still touch my chest, but can flatten out and have it hit the side bars if needed. Plus my head is untouchable. I think if you are a serious powerlifter and don't bench inside the safety of a cage, then you're justing asking to take one in the kisser. And sooner or later you will. Then that person will always use a cage going forward (unless they have a death wish).

Find a gym that has powerlifters. We use the powerrack for lockouts only, the rest of our benchpress work we have spotters, about 8-10 total members in the group. If you dont have spotters you better get yourself inside of a powerrack.

I work out at LA Fitness in Coconut Creek, Florida.....No one there even knows what a power rack even is!

bro there's only one machine in the whole gym u need and its the power rack. 1 bar a bench and the power rack. You can do every worthy work out with those 3 basic things...
I work out with partners and use power rack, no one gets a lift off, no one gets spotted. You lose the weight let it fall!!

I like that

I press in the squat rack (they are sparingly frequented in my gym anyway). That way I avoid alot of potential problems. And I have had 315 lbs fall on my chest before -- luckily with no bruises at 155lb bw. I have heard of cracked ribs from 275lb from a 200lb guy that hesitated my help once when he was benching and the weight descended.

I broke several ribs with that 245 drop during warmups, it bounced twice before I grabbed it and put it back, with help of course, the bar popped out of my left hand at almost lockout so it dropped a long way, I thought I ruptured my aorta, I got it together to finish the meet though

We do, but only because its out of the way... we never remember to put the pins in so it kind of defeats the safety aspect.

But we like to be out of the general public area so I dont end up throwing plates at anyone, lol...

As Monster and I train together. I train in the cage because I tip the benches up inthe main bench area. Poorly designed Icarian benches. I tip the front of the bench up when I go over 315lbs. Tore up my shoulder from this happening before with 405. Using a db it keeps the bench down but often the db will roll and mess things up for me.

In the cage I have dumped 405 on my chest while benching raw by myself. No big deal I tipped it over. I have dumped 585 over my neck, luckily the pins were up that time , the spotters where a little slow in response. I could of been dead after that one. But it didn't scare me as much as it did Curious George :p .

I never really bench in a cage at Gold's, but I hit my max in a cage at another gym. There wasn't ANYONE there I would trust for a spotter, so I didn't really have a choice.

Now I just sandbag... :p

I was playing hooky that day... CG can spot, but you have to really know joe to spot him well... I can see it in his eyes when he reaches the "oh shit" phase of a lift and know to grab it. I can bail him out of any weight without side spotters... its all a matter of what degree of tea-bagging he is comfortable with! :p

Also, it hard for other people to spot him because hes like a little machine, and theyre busy being shocked by him and loose track of the lift. Thats a 585lb bench from a 195lb lifetime drugfree lifter.

I heard Curious George (over here hes Curgeo) was so scared after that he wouldnt let joe take another try with it, lol!

I tea-bagged the hell out of my brother one time but he was grateful anyway, big time

I always bench and squat in a power rack or squat rack. I hate waiting for spots and even then most of the time the spot is bad. The only problem is if I have to wait for some loser that thinks it's a curl rack. But I've been so annoyed by it lately that I've have told some of them to just move there bb away so the rack could be used for real exercises.

I call the power cage my "Palace of Pain and Truth". I love it. It's saved my face at least twice when I've used finiky bench shirts.
