Do deadlifts make your waist big?

Well?

I've been doing deadlifts for the last 6 months at least and I've noticed my waste is definately getting bigger. I'm not sure if this is just from a slight increase in fat though.

What can i do to get a good V shape, and should i cut out the deadlifting for a bit?

no, they don't make your waist bigger.
they will make your lower back/glutes more muscular, but the size difference in your waist would be negligable.
 
Depends. If you are lifting heavy then your stabilizing muscles (erectors, obliques, abs) will get bigger. Then yes your waiste will increase in size. Although your back and hips/glutes should also be growing making the appearance of the v-taper look better.

If you are doing more of a rep structure than a strength one then no your waiste probably won't grow from deadlifting.

The DLs may make your waist a little bigger but in proportion to they way they grow the mid-upper area of the V it is shrinking.
 
IMO they make your obliques and core thicker.

I just recently quit doing heavy deadlifts and after 6 weeks I already feel my obliques shrinking.
 
To answer your main question: I gained some inches on my waist, just from daedifting for 2 years and making large strength increases on the lift (different variations as well). I contribute this to my spinal erectors growing a good deal. Also I may have even bulked up my ab muscles from the heavy weight. Deadlifting heavy is not the same as high rep ab or lower back work. That high rep work doesnt seem to do much to bulk out the abs or lower back. Heavy deadlifts are like a bench press for your abs and lower back IMO. They hit those areas hard, and should cause growth just as if you trained your chest heavy. Atleast this was my main source of growth from the movement. Also theres a theory that breathing during deadlifting can expand the stomache. Either holding your breath or breathing hard thru out the movement. Not sure exactly what the theory was, but it seems to make some sense.
 
their is no merit to this argument..ill give you a few examples people who squat and pull heavy and dont have a thick waist..

I've pulled 550lbs for 6 reps, and 625 for a single with no belt, and still had a 29.5" waist on stage. I have noticed it getting a little thicker, but you cant expect to make muscle on your body but your waist grow
 
I think it should be expressed that the actual growth is in the portions of an inch just because of those muscles behind/to the sides your spine getting bigger - not something in the front.

but aren't you also doing a lot of oblique and ab work for hypertrophy, not just deadlifting for strength gains?
 
Wheter DLs make your waist bigger or not it shouldn't prevent you from doing some more DLs

actually no, I train abs 1x per week with a 45lb plate and static holds, but its as much for core strength, and I have never trained obliques. I have crazy obliques and serratus, but I'm pretty sure it from the heavy deads and squats with no belt

so did your waist get bigger from heavy deads or not?
 
yeah they make my waist grow.. but my pre workout feed before pulling is donuts and coffee which might have something to do with it
 
I'm 6'3 200 lbs with 10 % bodyfat...since I started deadlifting my waist has gone from a 30 to a 42.

I look rediculous now and it's all due to deadlifts. Worst exercise ever. Stop now before they ruin your life like they did mine.

i guess you guys agree with me that deadlifting won't make your waist bigger?
 
it wont make that much of a difference. how many of you are going to step on stage at a national level or above? even then....your upper body mass will overpower any small gains your deadlifting can do to "traumatize" your physique.

come on! get real. just lift, grow and make small changes when you are actually competitive!

You always say things perfectly.

I may have a thick waist...but I also have LOTS of other thick muscles...from deadlifting.

that is me. My waist did get a little bigger, but I think more from squats than deads. But it was still only 29.5" on stage, so like nate said, the gains on the rest of me far outweighed anything it did to my waist

i would agree
the gains i've made everywere else far outweigh any waist increase that may or not be there
 
sure deads expand waste size. but keep in mind we are talking about muscle here. they don't add fat lol.
 
If deadlifts dont add much muscle mass around the waist (lower back, opposite your belly), then where do they add the muscle mass? Higher up on the back?

I know I know deadlifts will add mass everywhere, but I'm asking which back muscles get the most growth from them? I always thought it was your lower back, right above your ass.

ass and hamstrings and lower back. i don't lift for 'mass' so i never really thought of them as a mass building thing.
 
They also make your back REALLY big.
