DivX codec and WindowsXP

I'm having a problem with movies that are encoded with the DivX codec locking up my WindowsXP system.

Anyone else seen this?

you need to install a divx codec..

I've tried versions 3, 4, and 5 of the DivX codec, and have also tried a DivX player, no luck. It'll play most of the movie, and then do a hard lock or bluescreen.

Sounds like the file you're trying to play which is the problem, not the codec or player. Get another divex movie and try it out.

XP is bad for video anyway. I had to fuck around with my system for hours before I could even get .avi's to play correctly. I shoulda' stuck with Win'98. Oh well..

poink: I'll give that player a shot. I've got DivX Player 2.0 alpha on right now.

Taps: I think you may be right, but I see this on a lot of files, and it's not consistent. Seems to happen more when I jump from point to point in a movie file.

Yeah, the same thing happens to me. I can usually only play a divex file straight through -- if I try to skip forward or backward, the player crashes.

I just stick with mpegs for the most part.

It depends on what program was used to rip the movie. Sometimes there are glitches etc.

Could be anything really.

I'm not helping here.....I'll shut up
