Ditching the gym for the dungeon

notpuff

New member
What do you think of quiting the gym and investing in a squat rack and various equipment. im thinking about buying a squat rack,a good bench that can be incline or decline.some interchangeable dumbells, a ex curl and straight bar. and some chains etc and make a home gym/dungeon and train there. Has anybody done this.

i did and i kinda regret it. it was a bit of money

the only con is i dont have spotters at home

i did that and i love it....but yea ya gotta point bout spotters...i need one when i bench heavy but theres usually someone here if i have to have someone. and here i can make as much noise as i want...listen to whatever music iwant and as loud as i want. ie: no celine dion or bruce springsteen crap.

I have the dungeon gym and I love it.

My power rack is an excellent spotter. The best $ I have ever spent in my life. Matter of fact ifI could do it all over again I would do it the exact same way.

:)

Well said KC

How would you work out, then??

Back to the topic, I have always worked out at home, and wouldn't want it any other way. I feel much more comfortable trying new things alone at home than in a gym. That may be a little self-conscience, but I feel more confident at home.:)

I became a pro strongman while using a $99 Weider power rack to bench in and a pair of old 55 gallon steel drums for a squat rack...

If you want to make it work...you can. I even made a couple of bars that I could train with...

It isn't perfect...but it was cheap and hardcore...and it worked.

go for it. i'd do it if i had the space. apartment living UPSTAIRS isnt conducive to building a rack in my room, storing weights etc.

I have a home gym and love it. You can train when you want
(2:00am, 10:00pm, 7:00pm...whatever you feel like it.) You bench and squat in the power rack if you don't have spotters.

Out of pure fustration and disgust with my local gyms / health clubs and all the etiquette lacking, chit chat yacking, doin curls on the squat rack, leave their dumbells everywhere idiots that go there, about 6 years ago I invested in a a home dungeon and absolutley love it. Yeah..... I don`t have spotters and on more than one ocassion had to roll the bar down my chest and onto my stomach when failed doing barbell inclines.....but that lil inconvience doesn`t even begin to compare with that annoying shit I had to put up with in my gym. 1500 to 1700 bucks later for some decent equipment (that will never wear out) and I am one happy camper. I have said before and I will say again, I would love to meet and shake the hand of the guy who invented the power rack/cage. That is truly one simple but VERY versatile piece of equipment. Don`t leave home without it !!!!!! :)

I have a pretty decent home gym. I love it. I sometimes just wanna go to the commercial gym for a change of scenery but not always.

Are you hardcore? Will you be lifting in 3 years? Will it collect dust? If you will use the stuff and have the room I say go for it. Saves ALOT of time too.

btw Don`t start with a smith machine, unless you have ALOT of room and everything else first. JMO

one problem is my garage doesnt have a high roof , so i dont know if a power rack can fit, does anybody know of any smaller racks or how to build one

yeah, a power rack will keep you from dying, but if you do a bit of benching, and in my case, i was doing a LOT of benching, you're selling yourself short if you don't have somebody to lift-off for you

I can relate Jeremy. Although I do all my flat bench presses with dumbells, I do my inclines with a bar. There has been ocassions when nearing completion of a set and getting to that crucial, balls to the wall last rep, I wasn`t quite sure if I would have made the rep so to be safe racked it. Now maybe I could have made it and blew that all important rep, I`ll never know, but IMHO that is the only "serious" drawback with a home dungeon. There has been times I did try and made the rep and there has been times I missed and had to roll the bar down my chest onto my abs/lap. Yeah...it sucked but no biggey. Do I miss the smith machine at the gym ? you bet I do. Do I miss the hack squat, fuckin A I do, do I ever get bored doing one legged standing calf raises on a block holding a dumbell, yeah, sometimes I do...... and do I miss the AC when its 100 degrees outside.....absofuckinlutely.....but the pros with a home dungeon (for me) outweigh the cons hands down.

Hey Notpuff.... I just went into my garage and measured my power rack and it is 82 inches high ( 6' 10") I don`t know if that is a standard height or not but it sounds about in the ball park. Its made by a company called Bodysolid. I had the height problem in my last house and it was pretty close to not fitting but it did. Also in my last house, I could not do standing military presses with the 45`s on cuz of the low ceiling. No problem....just used the 25`s and it was all good. Hope the height info helps.

They both look right up your alley as far as height goes. The prices sound pretty damn good too. Good luck bro :)

I can`t say from personal experience but it looks like a solid unit and I have heard nothing but good remarks on this forum regarding that company. Most of the power racks I have seen for home use all look about the same more or less and they all seem to use the same steel gauge and construction. I`m sure there are some cheapies out there but the ones in the link you put in your thread don`t look like cheapies to me at all. Also, keep in mind you do not need gym quality for a home dungeon. Its not like there are going to be 40 to 80 people beating the shit out of it on a daily basis like at a commercial gym. It will most likely be just you and perhaps a workout buddy. So as long as it is a decent unit it will last you a lifetime. The rack I have looks exactly like their model 92580 and I mean exactly, only difference seems to be the company name.

hammer has one of those racks from that place...not sure which of the 2...but his takes a fucking beating

i have a closed rack from them and its very good quality

Yeah that first rack looks good. I bought a rack that I wanted and had it cut (the four verticle columns) at a local shop and was good to go. It cost $80 for cutting and redrilling new holes.

I say find a training partner to wo in your dungeon. Free membership, Someone might jump on the idea.

im just worried about a spotter to help lift up the weight.

I am assuming you are talking about lifting the bar off the rack when you first start you set.

Lifting the bar off the rack by yourself builds character, it builds self confidence, self reliance, independence and when the going gets tough in life, you will be able to deal with it and hold your head up high cuz you didn`t need no stinkin help lifting the bar off the rack !!!

Seriously speaking now....IMHO, the only lift you "may" need help in lifting the bar off the rack is barbell benches and incline benches and the same goes for needing a spot on that last rep. In every other exercise, the power rack is your workout spotter and buddy. Unless your doing one rep max`s or triples with a weight that relatively heavy for you on the benches, I don`t see why you would really need help in lifting the bar off the rack. Personaly, I think your concern with the help off the rack thing is a non issue. You work around it bro.....remember....this is a home dungeon we`re talking about.....there will be some limitations......but the one your concerned about (IMHO) is no limitation what so ever.....unless of course you make it one.

well i only need help lifting the bar with bench press, incline, military press . and the last rep but i think i can make up for the loss of rep with a drop set

Now your talking bro.......drop set, a rest pause set, super set, whatever........ thats called working around it and using your imagination........your there dude !!! :)

Oh.... as far as the military press....do em standing up with the bar set on the rack at shoulder height. You just walk up to it, grab the bar, set your hands at the desired width, take a step back and launch that bad boy up.....aside from working some of the stablizer muscles when doin military presses standing, you also get the added benefit or option of doin a few push presses when your at the end of your set and can no longer press in strict or somewhat strict form.

was it hard to setup, does a regular bar fit fien or do u need a longer bar? does it shake allot?whats shipping l ike

i would get some friends first before you invest. this way, you can have people with you when you train. if not, power rack itself can take the spotter out of certain exercises but not all. this is just my thoughts. tb

No it was easy to set up. Regular bar ??? Use olympic bar and plates, their not that expensive. No mine does not shake or wobble. Can`t help you on shipping, I bought mine local.

Ya know bro....you Live in Staten Island......I grew up across the Bayonne Bridge from you in Bayonne. Anyway.... check out your local yellow pages under exercise or exercise euipment. I`m sure there must be an exercise store or two in your area. Go down there and take a looky loo at their racks and what not so you can actually get a feel for the thing. Grab a bench and lay under it, shake it around to check stability, etc. etc. etc.

Some stuff is free shipping. Check it out. I got my rack free shipping. Many places have that. I think NYBBELL has it.

Just think, if you believed the models on the infomercials you could replace all that with a bowflex! Although a bowflex would probably cost the same amount as your set up. Go figure.
