Digital camera question

What should I look for when buying a camera? What are the better brands? I destroyed my last one when I was snowboarding, so I need one that can get smacked around a little. I don't really care what I spend as long as it's worth it. So far I've been told to look for 8* optical zoom and not more than 4 MP. What else should I know?

Mega pixels are relative. I picked up an Olympus 3.2 Mp yesterday for $270 brand new.

I'm not doing anything professional so it is more than enough for me.

I have a kodak easyshare cx6230, its only 2.0 megapixels but its got fucking great quality, 3x optical and 10x digital zoom, night shot, all the fucking bells and whistles, and its durable as fuck,I landed on it boarding when I blew my landing off a kicker and its fine

I have the cannon SD400.

love it.

very small, great features, not too pricey.

Definitely get an upgraded memory card.. 512 or 1GB.

Thanks folks. What about the zoom? A friend told me to look for this 8* optical zoom, but didn't seem to know why. I'm guessing he got sold on it and is talking out of his ass.

If you get a zoon lense, make sure it retracts into the camera if your taking it snowboarding and shit. My digi cam has this 4 inch lens sticking out that I can't take off so it's a pain in the ass to bring anywhere

Megapixels:
Nothing under 3.3, nothing over 5 unless you are a pro or have $ to burn

Optical Zoom:
Nothing under 3x Sky's the limit on the top end according to your budget.
Digital Zoom is BS and should be disregarded

With your needs it sound like you want a very small size camera with retractable lens. And an integrated sliding cover over the lens would be nice so you don't have to mess with a lens cap.

Olympus, Sony, Cannon, Nikon, Fuji are good solid brands.

Excelent advice. Had a fuji, then a cannon, now i am using a nickon coolpix 7mpx with 1gb card that uses.. and this is a MUST!: either rechargeable OR regular AA batteries.

Cannot tell you how many friggin times the batter has fecked me. This way i dont have to sweat it, just hit a shop and pop in some everreadys and thats that.

I suggested the Kodak Easyshare DX7630 to another member here...
friend of mine uses it all the time & I'm not kidding when I say it takes AWESOME pix!

As soon as I can I'll upload some of his work and post it here.

*P.S. Guy landed a model shoot w/ this cam...no joke.

Sony Cyber-shot. We use the 3.2mpxls ones at work. They are super tough and take great pics. I've gotten mud, snow, rain, drilling gunk on mine and it still works great. I've dropped it and banged it against stuff and it seems to keep on truckin.

Cheers,
Scotsman

Thank you sir. Do any of these come in water resistant models?

I recently learned that more megapixels does not mean better quality or clearer, sharper images - the higher the megapixel of your camera, the larger images you can print while retaining quality. So for most users who probably want to make mostly 4 x 6 or 5 x 7 prints, a 2 - 4 MP camera is just fine (although I don't think any companies make only 2MP cameras nowadays, most of 'em are at least 3.2 MP). For those who want to make prints larger than 8.5 x 11, or who plan to crop and blow up pictures a lot, a higher MP camera is more suitable. But you probably only need 4MP at the most for average usage.

The SD400 is a nice looking camera...actually, all of the compact, SDXXX cameras are nice looking. I've read things about the LCD being very fragile though and Canon not covering it under the warranty?

I've gone through 4 digital cameras this summer finding one for work.

Sony 3.2 - nice camera, the mega-pixels were just too low and I wanted better quality prints.

Olympus- SUCKED

Fuji - Almost threw it in the ocean.....but I don't litter

Sony 7.2 megapixels Cyber-shot- Very good, easy to use camera with beautiful prints.
