Diagnose my car problem

When I start it it immediately shuts down. Pressing down on the gas for 10 seconds usually get it and keeps it running. So what could be causing this?

The battery was replaced last year, so I doubt that is the problem.

I am assuming either the fuel system or air intake system is dirty. I had a problem like this a few years ago and when I brought it in the mechanic said he had to clean the air intake because it was clogged with carbon.

Tomorrow I"m taking it into the mechanic, but what can I do in the meantime? I can buy fuel system cleaner, but what else can I buy for it? Is there anything I can use to clean the air intake system?

it's fuel injected so pushing down on the skinny pedal after it stalls doesn't do jack. . .if it only does it when it's cold, it's probably some kind of sensor. . .your high idle (till it warms up) isn't getting activated for some reason. after you have it fired up, does it stall on you at stop signs or anything, or does it run fine after it's started??

When I had this problem before in 2004 it would stall at stop signs unless I depressed the gas (and the brake at the same time to stop it from moving naturally). When I took it in the mechanic said the air intake was clogged and he had to manually clean it. So I assume it is a mix of air and fuel intake system clogs.

Both times it did happen in fall/winter though. It is november now and it happened in October of 2004.

ok. . .so. . .this time, is it stalling all over the place or only when you first start it up?? if it's all over the place, it could be fuel filter, fuel pump, fuel injectors. . .hell, it could be something in the ingnition system. . .everything is pretty cheap except the fuel pump as many of them are submerged in the gas tank. . .takes a while to get to it and replace it so, it's kind of expensive. . .relatively speaking. other than the stalling problem, does it seem to be down on power at all??

I think it is down on power a bit. I have noticed it doesn't go as fast as it used to, I have trouble getting to 65 sometimes.

ok. . .so it's probably something in the fuel system (filter, pump, injectors) or. . .as you suggested it could be as simple as a dirty air filter. . .however, i've seen some pretty damn dirty ones and the vehicle still ran fine. . .go to the auto parts store and get an air filter and change it yourself. . .you can do it in like 5 minutes. . .seriously. . .my friggin wife can do it (no offense ladies). . .see if that makes any difference.

it's not blowing any white smoke at all is it??

Clogged injector....

Add some fuel "cleaner" as well as the injector stuff.

Change the filter.....

then see where you are

I've changed the air filter before. However I think it has been at least 12 months since I changed it last.

I don't know how to change the fuel filter and don't think it has been changed in the last 5 years.

sounds like the MAF sensor. It can be cleaned with electrical contact spray cleaner ($5 at Home Depot). If it's never been cleaned, then it's dirty as a street ho after 118k miles.

How does one find the MAF sensor? I don't know shite about cars. I can get someone I know to look at it though.

and make sure you DO NOT touch the sensor itself. Spray it thoroughly a few times, but dont let the tip of the spray nozzle touch it. Reinstall the sensor, and then D/C the neg bat cable for a few minutes, then reconnect and try to start it again. Definitely spend 5 bucks on the electrical contact cleaner before taking it to a mechanic.
