Delicious Protein Bars

Back in the day, when I'd first started lifting on my own, outside of baseball, I used to pick up protein bars quite regularly. It seemed like a smart thing to do. But then they started receiving a lot of negative attention and people said they were crap -- and let's face it, a lot of them were. Before then, I'd been neglecting to read the nutrition label (which is always a sin; doesn't matter what the product is). Once I started doing that, very few seemed to be worth it. They either didn't have enough protein or had too much sugar or fat. I'd sided with the Pure Protein bars for a while; they had ~20g protein per bar, depending on the flavor and limited carbs and fat. I'll be honest, though, I didn't enjoy eating them lol. They were a chore to chew and it wasn't the snack that gave me extra protein and satisfied my sweet tooth, anymore.

For a couple years, I'd given up on protein bars unless I was in a total bind and on the road or something like that and didn't have a better option.

But a few months ago, I was turned onto NTBM's Better Protein Bars. I'm generally a bit of a skeptic at first, so I didn't think much of them and I'd been out of the protein bar game for so long that I wasn't that excited to try them. Add in the fact that they aren't already made and I had to do the work, I wasn't thrilled lol.

Well, once I got in the kitchen and had my mixing bowl, peanut butter, honey, and bag of NTBM bars ready, I was pleasantly surprised. It wasn't near the work that I'd anticipated. I know what the bag says and what the advertisements say, but if you've been around as long as I have, you've run into plenty of things in life that are far from how they're advertised. This was not one of those cases. It was very easy to mix up and quick at that.

I scooped the mixed contents into a flat plastic tray and stuck it in the fridge for a few hours and then went back to cut them up. Soft, chewy, moist and fantastically flavored.

In my first batch, I had the sour apple flavor, which is so far my favorite. I only used 1/2 cup of honey instead of the 3/4 cup as I was cutting at the time. It still tasted great.

Since then, I've tried original peanut butter and chocolate raspberry, as well. Both are great, but I still LOVE the sour apple (for those wondering, it's not really that sour and not that strong of an apple flavor, either). Since that first batch, I've been using the 3/4 cup of honey and I must say I love it (1/2 cup wasn't bad by any means, though).

My secret weapon is dipping them into light cool whip (perfect combination!).

So, I'll be a repeat customer of this product for life; no doubt about that. I'm happy to have protein bars once again (oh, and by the way, sometimes I'll just leave it in the mixing bowl and eat a spoonful here and there lol - yep, they're that good).

Nice review, and i love the idea of dipping them into light cool whip !!:Chef: Gotta try this !

Just buy some rubber gloves if you are afraid to get your hands dirty during the mxing process...but the best part is being able to lick them clean...just ask my black lab!

I want to apologize for asking this, but it doesn't warrant a thread of it's own.

I HATE honey, but used it to make my batch of Better Bars. They taste great. My question is how can I make them lower carb? What can I use BESIDES honey to sweeten and bind them? Can I use nothing at all, and have the bars a little looser consistency? Thanks for the help on this.
