Deadlifts?

yeah, they use primary the lower back and hamstrings, but there are many secondary muscles used. one is the abs, you have to use a lot of core muscle in deadlifts.
 
Depending on how you do them (stifflegged, etc), they are a great whole body exercise. Back, legs, traps, abs, etc, etc...
 
This does not mean that you do not need to increase your ab strength though. The stronger that your abs become (through heavy resistance training) the stronger that your back will get.
