Deadlifts: How do you use them?

I have been reading some thread on this forum with some people saying how they use deads. Some saying purely for their legs. When I do them I cant feel my legs getting a pump nor do they ever get sore. Some saying they use them for lower back.
I on the other hand use them for my No.1 lat builder.
When I use my primamry grip (double over hand) I feel my lats explode. When I use 1 over and under hand grip I can only feel the lat on the same side of the over hand grip, hand.
I have also seen a guys as of late doing lite deads for reps and merley letting the Weights plates tap or not even touch the ground, then going on to the leg curl machine.

I ant to do legs Ill do some squats thanks,
Gimme some feed back!

Deads are primary back builder. But works every muscle in the body at the same time. Heavy deads will build overall mass period.
Using a dead in replacement for a squat is a lazy way out of doing squats.
Chances are they don't want to do squats so their substituting deads because someone had this great revolation and monkey see monkey do.

haha. tell that to the guys at Westside Barbell

i spilt my quads and hams up,and do each on different days.i always use deadlift and use all of them in the same workout ei: bar-bell deadlift, stiff leg deads and romanian deads then leg curls. i aslo sub-out romanian's for lunges sometimes. i guess it all depends on what you want bc my hams don't look all that impressive but i don't lift for looks.

depends on how your doing them. wider stance(ie sumo)=more glutes, narrow stance=more lower back.

guys goin from deadlifts to leg curls??? pretty silly. im sure they like to brag about their leg curl numbers...

leg curls iso your hams and hit them at a different angle.

bodybuilders seem to think of them as a back exercise, but i frequently get sore hamstrings from the movement too. using a wide 'snatch' grip i will also get soreness in my lats sometimes. but the main stress i always feel in my spinal erectors and mid-back.

ya but i think these deadlifts if not properly done is the worst possible thing for your body you can about tear every muscle in your body

bad-form deadlifts can wreck your back, bad form squats can wreck your knees, bad form benching will kill your rotator cuffs or fracture your ribs. good form is a must if you're lifting weights :)

Most Westsiders seldom do deadlifts.
Deads work your entire posterior chain - from your calfs to your traps. Plus forearms and grip. Different techniques will shift the focus to different muscles, i.e. less knee movement = more hamstring involvement.

so i guess that doing speed deads on DE days every week, means that they are sledom done...

saying that substituting deads for squats is the lazy mans way out, and that they are for building the back...

come on. any serious PLer will tell you you're wrong.

I use Shoulder width stance deadlifts for my No.1 Lat excersise and Stiff leged deads for hammys, on different day of coasre.
BTW the sme guys I wrote about that super sets his quick deads with Hammy curls loves to do light rep squats.........CHEAT SQUATS!his thights not going anywhere even past parralell.
It seems that everyone in my gym does incomplete squats, apart from me and about 4 competing powerlifters or what their called. Those crazy bastards squat like 300+ kgs while Im stuck on 100kgs.

I got the Westside Barbell DVD series to prove your first sentence is wrong.
Did I say substituting deads for squats? No, your wrong again.
At least your consistent.
Actually Westside often substitutes low box squats for deads. They use the conjucated method i.e. rotating key exercises every two to three weeks, so you saying they do anything every week proves you know nothing of Louis training methods.
Why don't you post vids of your top lifts. As a serious PLer you must have some big numbers to back up your expertice on this subject.

Im no expert, but if you keep the weight on your heels as you do the deadlift it seems to hit the back more than the legs
