Deadlift

today was back day and I was busting out some deads when this bodybuilder came up and asked if he could work in with me. I was like sure. after the I was done, I asked him how my form was for deadlifts, and he said that it was pretty damn good. now that was just motivating to hear coming from a dude who's 6'3, 232 and freaking HYOOG(pretty ripped). this guy was like twice as thick as I was as far as chest goes, but his waist was almost smaller than MINE! this guy was a freak, but the point of this post was, it was pretty nice hearing someone say that my form was pretty good on deads since no one EVER does deads at my gym, and this guy happened to want to bust some deads with me. awesome.

another uplifting moment brought to you by the People's Champ.

You were sexually attracted to him, weren't you?? :D

Just kidding bro - but seriously - I know exactly what you mean!! It's incredible how much a few simple words from a fellow lifter can motivate you!! I had a killer squat session last week after a two month lay-off and the only thing that got me through it was the encouragement of this guy that offered to spot me...

Just something to think about - if you see someone pulling heavy deads at the gym - and you're impressed - tell the bro what you think!!! Support the team!!

Where do you train bro?! No one else does deads? Not even stiff leg? (my favourite exercise) Does make ya feel good to get encouragement from a more advanced lifter. I was doing inclines the other day, without a spotter. I was about to max on my last set, so I asked some guy to help out. He stood beside me to start, then he tried to spot me from the front! He tried to stick his fucking groin in my face! Needless to say a racked the weight and finished my set. Don't know if he just didn't know what he was doing, or trying to get off! What can ya do?!

I train at bally's. yeah, a family oriented gym. the guy also told me that there are deadlifting bars where they bend forward so the bar will not run in to your legs on the way up. this guy had some knowledge and it was like a breath of fresh air hearing what he had to say. actually, hearing it from someone else instead of reading it was an exhilirating experience.

Good to hear that pulls are making you get noticed.

Where can you get bars that bend so you can deadlift without hitting your knee's? Are they any good? Hitting my legs is one of the reasons I very rarely do normal deads. I always stiff leg, but very rarely normal dead.

I hear ya bro. The deadlift has to be THE most important lift, ever. Aside from squat :p

NFG

Just pull...and don't get close enough to the bar to scrape yourself. If the reason you are not doing deads is because it scrapes your leg...well...hmmmm.

I like it

2nd week doing deadlifts. Holy SH*T its like doing areobics. My whole body hurts. Today is supposed to be leg day but I am gonna have to take a day off.

Question fro you deadlift guys. I had to stop after the 3rd set yesterday because I kept catching my nutz with the bar. I made it past the knees. Am I doing something wrong.

i love deadlifts... i dont mind the cuts i get, i usually only get them on heavy deadlifts though around my max (335), then the blood starts to flow.

i dont really get many stares though, as the deadlift and squat are some of the most popular lifts in my gym, so its an everyday thing to see someone deadlift

Triggerfinger, ouch that hurts...

Are you making sure you are standing up before locking the bar out toward your body??? On my self the only way I could hit the jewels is to bend back before my legs were fully extended. Check your form one more time and see if you are getting it down right.

To me, raw knees and shins were just a part of deadlifting. I was originally taught to keep the bar as close to my body as possible to keep your center of gravity close, dargging 500lbs up and down your legs definitely lets you know you're alive.

Kinda funny story, a few years ago, a guy I trained with and myself were in the change room comparing injuries; I had just hit a 550 dead, and he had buried a 805lb squat. My shins were bleeding openly and he had burst a ton of blood vessels in his upper chest. A couple of teenagers walked into the changeroom, took one look at the 2 of us, and walked right back out.

It's all about being hardcore!!!

need more work on form

Gonna lower the weight and work on form. I think that I am locking the bar too soon...

thanks

Deadlift Form

I still can't seem to get this deadlift form down..

The gym I use is my work gym so there is no one there, NO ONE, there that does dead lifts or probably even knows how.

I can do them at home, I have the olympic bar and weights there..even a mirror the check my form, but I always feel like my back in rounded.. or i am pulling up with me back before me legs are extended enough.. I dunno..

It does KILL my lower back though, is that the point? That seems to be the only place I feel it..

Oh and I am doing 95lbs only... trying to keep it light so I can get the form.. but it still hurts.

triggerfinger: something to think about...relax your arms. Let your shoulders sag as low as you can on these. Just ONLY tighten your grip...not your shoulders, traps or arms. Let them just hang. This should allow the bar to be lower on your body when you are totally locked out...hence not hitting your nuts.

i believe u should just deadlift regularly but if ur that worried about scraping ur shins, then use a trap bar, u kno the one like a hexagon, stand inside it and pull, that simple

Ok.... I'm gonna ask the same questions all the beginners on here ask, that piss off all the Deadlift lovers... What's the difference btwn straight leg and normal deadlift... I do deadlift, but I'm not sure if my form is correct and I don't know if I'm even doing straight leg (which I think I am) or normal...

straight leg, and stiff leg deads are performed different than coneventional deads. your feet are placed close together, and the muscles that are being worked are your lower back and hamstrings. very good after a killer leg workout to bring out the hams. the motion is you grab the bar, and lift with JUST yor lower back, bringing the bar to waist level, and lowering the weight back down. some stand on a stool that is 6 inches or so higher to get a better stretch, as I do. you wont go as heavy as you would with regular deads since your quads are not invovled.

I know what you mean here, but it sounds dangerous for someone who is very new at lifting to read. I just want to add that you are not bending your back. Try it without any bar or anything first, just to get the physics down. Just stand there with you back straight, and pretty much just stick your ass out, forcing you to bend at the waist. That is where the bend comes from, not your back. Your back should remain straight.

People's Champ, this is totally not a flame, I just got nervous for other's backs when I read this part!

Hope I helped,

ND

Don't be afraid to bend over...the hips should not always be down low...this provides poor leverage.

Just some tosser training. Scared the fuck out if me!!

Nate dogg-no prob. I couldnt think of a better way of explaining at the time of the post. obviously, you'd want to start with the lightest weight possible to just get the feeling and motion pf the exercise. and then add weight to a point where you are comfortable. like I said erlier, this isnt an exercise you'd want to max out on.
