Deadlift woes....advice sought.

I'm kinda new to dl's but have been doing them consistantly with 5x3's for the past couple of months....

I'm now at 355x3 but have hit a problem...

I've been using wrist-straps because they help me lift more weight...my left hand grip is very poor above 315....

Well..I must be strapping them incorrectly....last time out I actually bruised my right wrist and the week before that I pinched a nerve in my left wrist and had a numb thumb for about 2-3 hours...kinda scary....

I really want to increase my weight...I feel like I can go heavier...but I don't want to give up the straps...even thought that is a great way to increase my grip strength....

Anyone else ever had this problem? Could I be wrapping them wrong?

Make sure that when you strap them they feel comfortable and firm. Another idea is to grip with your hands closer...maybe about 2 ft apart so your wrists are more straight than on an angle if you grip the bar with your hands far apart. I've felt tension like that so I grip them a little closer and they feel fine now.

I used to have bruises on my wrists from wearing straps.

I don't wear straps anymore either and have pulled over 700 raw and 500 x 15 in 60 seconds.

Focus on ways to strengthen the grip first and foremost.

As far as straps...go here: http://www.prowriststraps.com/

Tell him what kind of problems that you are having and see what he suggests. I'm sure that he can fix you right up with the PERFECT and BEST straps in the world for your needs. I love the ones that he sent me and can't wait to use them in a contest!!!

Ohh...be SURE and tell him that Clint Darden sent you his way :)

can't get better advice than that. Personally you need to tighten the wraps before the lift so it doesn't travle down your wrist onto your carpals and compress any nerves

Strengthen The Grip So You're Not So Dependent On Straps. They're A Great Tool To Get Your Lift Up In Weight, But You Want Your Grip To Strengthen Right Along With It. The Straps Will Kinda Hinder That.

ThanX brother!!! I appreciate the kind words! Im really more of a deadlift beginner, since Ive only been at them for 2 years, and one year weekly. Ive learned alot though. Deadlifts were never a strength of mine, and now they are finally coming along after doing them steadily. Much faster then expected. Considering the sheer hours Ive spent deadlifting I guess it would add up to a few years experience compared to most. I do alot of sets. Im still working on the technique though and always trying to better it. The flat shoes made a big difference and the power rack pulls have helped incredibly. This may be off subject, but Ive gotten great results alternating rack pulls (on the lowest setting, upper shin level) with regular deads. Basically what I do is, Ill start deadlifting off the floor until I hit a plateau, then Ill switch to the rack until I plateau, then back again. Its worked great. I increased my deadlift from 405 to 510 in 14 months. As for the wrapping issue. Do you wrap them extremely tight? You might be able to wrap them slightly looser without causing the same bruising. I use straps myself. A great alternative to straps is chalk. You can get it online or find it at certain stores, though rare. I can grip over 700lbs with chalk and a mixed grip, and nowhere close without it. Thats the kind of difference it makes. So Id reccomend that for sure. Try it if you like, and let me know how it works out!
