Deadlift with 1 hand facing each way

When you lift with a double over-hand grip (hands in the same direction), the bar will naturally try to rotate along your fingers and out of your hand, which obviously makes it harder to lift as you're trying to grip the bar as well as lift it. Using a mixed grip (hands in opposite directions) stops this because the rotational force from each hand cancels the other out. There's also a hook grip, where you use a double over-hand grip but tuck your thumb under your first two fingers. The pressure from your fingers on your thumbs keeps your hands locked closed. That's useful for the olympic lifts like cleans, which you can't do with a mixed grip because one of your hands will be pointing in the wrong direction.

It's considered good practise to use a double over-hand grip for as long as you can, which will strengthen your grip. Then when you start losing your grip, switch to mixed/hook grip.

Some people say that a mixed grip can cause a twisting force on the spine, but I haven't noticed anything personally.

I must be bored, writing such a long post about how you hold the bar :)

Somehow, I'm going to get in trouble for this one, I can feel it.

I need clarification, if I may ask. Your Title says "1st cycle Underway". Please, for the love of God, tell us that you aren't doing a cycle of steroids and asking a question regarding mixed grip deadlifts.

If I have somehow made the wrong assumption regarding the definition of "cycle", please let me know.

What do you call heavy weight? How much can you lift using the various grips? Are you grip-limited anyway? What does your cycle look like? What's your lifting history?

We can hardly give you tips knowing nothng about you beyond general ones like "Don't eat the yellow snow".

LoL

If you're doing reps and getting some bounce at the bottom (i.e., you train sloppy), then the mixed-grip does tend to make the bar start windmilling, which is bad news for the spine, which cannot withstand nearly as much rotational force as it can linear/compressive force.

Regarding the spine: For me sumo style deads greatly reduced the stress on my lower back when I had a small injury last year. Both feet out wide near the plates and hands more towards the center of the bar. And agreed with the above, reverse grip helps to prevent your hands from slipping throughout the lift.

I have just always done the double overhand grip and in high school and college never saw anybody ever lifting any other way. Then I watch video clips of real lifters on youtube and they are using the "mixed" grip.

I do reps at 265 right now, I never max because of a previous back injury.

I don't really have much problem with grip when I use my gloves so I'll stick with it. Thanks.

I'm curious about your title too. Have you just started a steroid cycle? A 265 deadlift (with gloves) is indicative of someone that has tons of natural potential in them, just sat there waiting to be tapped.

Yea just started my first AAS cycle (week 4 right now) of Test/Var just trying to get strong.

I agree with those who said that a double overhanded grip should be used as long as is possible. I use it for all my warm-up sets and as much of the working sets as I can then I switch to a mixed grib. Maxes are always done with a mixed grip.

I've never experienced the bar 'windmilling' due to a mixed grip.

nelmsjer, you missed a good thread by BiggT on this subject.

Great thread...one more people need to read! Thanks!

You will be able to lift more with the mixed grip. For instance, I start loosing grip with the double overhand at around 375. After that by switching to mixed grip I can go up to 505 on Farmers holds for about 10-15 seconds. I have been been training my grip training to get to 505. I use no gloves, belts, just some chalk.

Some big names use a double overhand hook grip, Travis Mash and Chris Mason, but these guys work at it extremely hard too.

I've tried and am an admitted pussy when it comes to the double overhand, jacks the shit out of my thumbs and hurts like a bitch when I put any weight on the bar.

Regardless, I definately think it minimizes the windmilling of the bar, I always get more scabbs on the chin that my grip is underhand, my right chin, maybe different from others but just increases the drag on that side I suppose.

If you can get sufficient flexibility and keep your shoulders in a plane behind the bar, you can definately do some damage in the dead...

Brad Gillingham as well.

Heck...I prefer to deadlift with one hand under and one hand in my pocket.

;)
