Deadlift question

Guys,

Remember I told you that my Deadlift is coming along nicely? Well, it most certainly is!!! Anyhow, I don't know why, but I seem to be a bit "slow" on the pull when pulling the DL. When I squat I power up like there's no tomorrow, but for some reason it seems to me that my deadlift speed is not fast enough. I always make the lift, its just that it should be faster. Alot of Bros in the gym have noticed this and pointed it out "Your strong, but you need to work on your speed".

But, even when I drop a good 50kg plus off the weight, the pull is still not fast enough. Prehaps the best thing to do here is to post up a video clip, but in the meantime, has anyone got training advice, maybe technique advice, to increase my speed. The problem is speed, not strength.

A video would be great, as it is very hard to spot of problem without seeing the lift.

You probably answered your own question in that you need to work on speed. Have you ever trained with bands? Also, a lot of times people improve their pull from the floor by pulling off an elevated surface.

Hey buddy - just shooting from the hip here, but do you do powercleans or other explosive moves? Perhaps jump squats with dumbells on the floor at the start of every rep would be cool.

i like to mix in speed deads, grip and rip style to get used to being more explosive off the floor. alot of times people "squeeze" the bar off the floor instead of exploding up which leads to a very slow take off and kills your momentum. I've since learned to more or less explode off the ground. (though it doesnt look explosive). I'd probably argue that cleans arent the way to get fast off the floor since the first pull in a clean doesnt tend to be too explosive. you could do some elevated deadlifts to work speed through your actual deadlift starting/sticking point, speed deads, or pick apart your deadlift and see what your weak points are and hammer them. I knew my hammies were weak as was my core and started killing it and noticed i felt alot tighter pulling off the floor, where that was my weakness before.

just thinking out loud....sorry.

hope that helps.

Yeah, I agree with Nate. While cleans are probably second to only snatches in developing overall functional explosion in my opinion......I don't think they are very specific to the deadlift as the explosion doesn't come until the second pull, when the weight is already off the floor.

I also agree that a lot of people make love to the bar, lol, pulling too slow and gently.......videos of the top pullers look like they are babying the bar, but that is just gravity working against them......you need to pull fast, speed kills, man.

Thanks for the help guys. Will try standing on plates next week when doing deads and will also do some Rack Deads and see where exactly the sticking point is - and report back!

Funny about the timeing, but I saw a buddy of mine doing 350lb deads standing on 2 thick 25kg plates today (about 5 inches off the floor). I though that it would be really difficult, but to my suprise, I found it quite comfortable. The beginning is a bit harder, but when you get half way up it's like butter. I'm going to try that regularly - it might help my squat too.
(I may well be wrong about the cleans! :)

it's hard to Deadlift really fast because you start at the bottom instead of at top like with a squat
body tightens up moreso
I think it's normal for a deadlift to be slower then other lifts I don't see it as anything to worry about

I've been doing speed deads off 2 plates in the hopes of improving my sticking point on dl- the bottom. I love 'em so far.

I enjoyed lifting from plates in that it gave the hammy a good stretch.
