Deadlift help

Cynical Simian said:
It would only be slightly less :rainbow: than maxipads, but you could wear tights (Under Armour to impress tha honeyzzz).

yeah jay cutler wears those in one of his vids, and he can't even pull it off, no way I could LOL

If you are scraping your knees and shins real bad, you're probably starting with the bar too far forward, and pulling up/back instead of straight up.

Yep. I remember ripping the bark off of my legs years ago when I frist started deadlifting. This is definately a form issue.

well, I work with a trainer, and he says to start with bar touching shins. I know I have good form. Also, arnolds book says same thing.

I've never had a problem with getting really scrapped from DL's... though most of the knurling on the oly bars in my gym are smooth.

Try some 80's style aerobic socks :rainbow:

...under your sweat pants of course :)

they are just little strawberrys, not like I am grating my shins, but it is on that rough spot on the bars with the cross-hatch etching and the bars at my gym are real rough.

It's funny you mention this....My son was born a year ago and I started back up at school and still continue to work a full time job. I haven't been able to make it too much to the gym the past 6 months.

I worked out today and somebody I haven't seen in a while started to talk to me. He looked at my shins and said, "Been doing deadlifts today?" I told him I hadn't, looked down and still saw the deadlifting scars that are on my shins....

At least it LOOKS like I have been to the gym...LOL

Honestly, try the socks under the sweats or just grin and bear it.

quite a number of Olympic lifters, and also powerlifters wear knee high soccer socks when pulling. it really doesnt look bad. I never wore them in training, but had a black pair that i wore in meets, because if you get blood on the bar in a meet they have to stop and clean the bar, and wont allow you to lift till you cover the wound. this can really screw up the timing of your warmups.

all in all, it dont look that bad. if you are worried about scarring, just wear the socks. no one will laugh if you are working hard. and even if they do, who cares.

Try grabbing some bands from jumpstretch...you'll explode so fast there won't be a chance of scraping your shins....

:)

I still say your probably pulling too far back. I start with the bar flush against my legs, ankles/feet turned out as far as I can. My shins stay pretty close to 90 degrees to the floor though, and the bar glides up like butter. If I start with it an inch too far forward, it won't move without a lot of effort. Then again, my shins were already scarred and bit up before I started deadlifting....

I go though phases of scraping and not scraping. My shins have been a mess several times but then I'll go for a while with no scrapes. Lifting double-overhand seems to help minimize scrapes for me. If I lift with mixed grip then the side with the overhand grip is more likely to take the hit.

Using a hook grip might give you good mileage if you can't grip your working weight with a simple double-overhand.

I once had someone suggest soccer shin-pads to me. I considered them up to the point where I envisioned catching them on the way down.
