i'm on my way to class last night and my oil pressure gauge starts bouncing erratically from 80psi to 0. so i'm thinking one of two things - either the sensor or the gauge is dying (or both) or i've got a major oil problem.
park the car and check the oil....nothing on the dipstick. now i'm kinda worried, but can't do anything at the moment cause i gotta go to class. after class i move the car to a more level spot and check it again. nothing. i add a quart and a half. nothing. add another quart (all the rest of the oil i had with me). it finally registers....on the tip. so at least now i know i've got 2 1/2 quarts in it (it takes 4 1/2 total). drive a mile to the nearest gas station and buy 2 more quarts. add a quart, it's full.
a week and a half ago i let a shop change my oil. it's rare i'll do that, but there was still snow on the ground and it was cold out, so i didn't want to deal with it. plus it seems the few times i've let someone else change the oil in that car for me, i've had to add 1/2 quart within 2 or 3 days. i've put 800 miles on it since the oil change, and a lot of that was done at 70+ mph.
took the car into the shop real quick this morning to alert them to the problem. they are going to check it out this afternoon (no time to do it this morning, i've got a class soon). they did say that sometimes that particular model will blow a seal where the lines run from the engine to the remote mounted filter and the oil just pours out. i can understand if that's the case. the car usually goes through about a quart of oil every 3500 miles between either burning it or leaking it (yes, it likes to mark it's territory).
it's a 91 S-10 Blazer. thing has 161000 miles on it. i've had this car for a year and a half and i've put 25K miles on it so far. yeah, i've gotten a lot of use out of a $900 car, but it's still got life in it, and if the shop neglected to fill it up with oil properly, i'm gonna start fighting for a new engine. running that thing hard for 800 miles 3 1/2 quarts low on oil would do some serious damage to that engine. it's got the 4.3L V6, non-Vortec. IMO - one of the 3 best V6s Chevy ever made.
i'm never optimistic. i have a feeling i'm going to get fucked on this somehow cause the thing already has a slow leak. i'm giving the shop the benifit of the doubt here considering they were nice about the whole deal (and so was i, considering my car might be FUBAR now).
damnit. just how i wanted to start off a weekend.
if this thing is screwed, i'm going to have to get the 88 Beretta back on the road. car has been sitting for a year, but still fires right up. i really don't want to drive that thing. i'll have to move the entire stereo over into it (gonna be a pain in the ass trying to make kickpanel mounts for my 6 1/2s and drop my massive sub box into the trunk).
damn cars.
