cutting and HIIT

Is it true that HIIT is much better than long periods of low intensity cardio for fat burning? Im going to start cutting for the summer...well, not so much cutting, just add in cardio to my routine and keep my diet the same, as i havent been gaining much BF...

I am currently lifting Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday Friday.. what days would be best for HIIT..and how many sets? Im thinking for 40 second sprints, 20 second jogs...but not sure how many to do? and like i said, it will be for fat burning purposes...
along with this, i'd like to keep as much muscle mass as possible, what else should i keep in mind to do this effeciently?
 
I believe HIIT cardio is the best for fat burning. Some agree with me some dont but it is proven that HIIT cardio increases metabilism for an extended period of time giving you a post workout caloric burn. I know you said you are lifting 4 days per week but what muscles are you training on those days. The reason I ask is that HIIT is taxing on your legs so you want to keep it away from your leg workout. Ive always done sprint 100 meters jog 100 meters and so on. Start at 6-8 100's sprinting and work your way up to 14-16.
