Crunches to remove belly fat?

Status
Not open for further replies.
I have been working out for a few months now.
I am seeing some results in the shoulders and arms
and look better overall.

I do have a pretty good gut on me.
I was once told that ab workouts do nothing for
the fat covering them. Crunches wont remove belly fat?

I know it comes down to diet and cardio in most cases,
am i wasting time doing ab workouts?

Thanks for any replies!!

Brad

A classic example of insanity.
Doing something over and over and expecting different results.

Abs are muscle, fat is fat. To lose fat you diet. to gain muscle you lift. Easy math; expend more calories than you intake

LOL:D I think he really needs cybergenics kits and the ab roller.

Good job on starting to work out! Just keep at it man. You will need to do some dieting and cardio to get rid of the fat though.
I used a CKD to shed mine last spring, but any cutting diet would do. Just don't starve yourself!
Best of luck!

Situps aren't useless even if spot-reduction doesn't work. If for example you used to be a fatass like I was sort of and you put on a ton of visceral fat, which stretched your abdominal muscles esp. the transverse abdominis, you could return to your original weight with more muscle than when you started (less fat overall) and have a much bigger gut because the muscle is stretched out.
Anyway, working the abs can fix that and it's a pretty good idea to have strong abdominal muscles no matter what you do.

how is he gonna return to normal weight if he doesn't diet. Dieting is not a hard concept... I just don;t get people, doing crunches will make your abs get bigger, but with the same amount of fat on top your stomach is just gonna look bigger

Ogrellah if I remeber right;

"In obesity the fat is many inches thick, often forming one or more saggiing folds. In the anteriro part of the stomach wall there are two parts, Camper's fascia and Scarpa's fascia. "Netter

Baically their are two fat layer one behind the muscles which is relatively thin versus the one in front which is very thick in fat people, So basically the fat doesn't stretch you muscles cause if that was true many obese people would have hernias

First, if you read my post I never said to not diet, as I dieted myself back down, I said to go ahead and do situps for other reasons.
Second, you're absolutely incorrect about visceral fat. Males gain it more than females, so maybe that's why you're mistaken. Hernias occur from a sudden tear, not the accumulation of fat over the years. People with stretched abdominal muscles for whatever reason are in fact more susceptible to hernias.
