hey gents.. and ladies... i just got a new bike (talking into from friends that own) and i was just wondering if you guys had any advice/tips for a basically new rider...i used to ride dirt bikes but that was like 10 years ago, so this is very new to me... so and anything you guys could offer is appreciated... oh the bike i got is a GSXR600

Ouch. You bought the most race inspired 600 that is out today.

You may want to go to your local college and look at doing a motorcycle learning course. It is actually a pretty good thing to do to get used to your bike.

Good luck and BTW, you picked a KICK ASS bike.

Advice.........ya sell it and buy a Harley ;)

Just kidding bro, if you are a Newbie to riding I say take a riding course, like amaritto said it will teach you how to handle your bike.

thanks guys, i actually was thinking about that... anyone with a website or number i could call to find a good one in my area?

Other than taking the Motorcycle Safety Foundation course, I'd say the hardest thing is learning self-control over the throttle. As long as you realize that your skill level is nowhere close to the ability of the bike's AND you ride within YOUR limits, you'll be okay.

Keep the rubber down and the shiny parts up.

dont own a bike personally but ive riden a few buddies bilkes and i gotta tell ya hold on and dont slam on the throttle

BPB-i definitly know to respect the machine, and to ride within my limits(which are low at this time) but other than the riders course, is there any good ways to practice all the basics like shifting and so forth, right now im quite light on the throttle and the only thing i can think of is just keep riding it up and down the side streets to get my coordination down with shifting and breaking, but if you guys have any other better or different ways to help the process, lemme know. and thanks for the replies all.

If there is a huge parking lot anywhere near your house, GO THERE. Take some cones and place them in different areas, maybe a figure 8 or such. And practice different situations. Like turning left. Turning right. Coming to a stop from 40, 50 , 60 mph. Just go out practice in a wide open safe area.
