Crosstraining Shoes....I need them!

Nonerz

New member
I really need some good crosstraining shoes...mainly for kickboxing. I have a good pair of Adidas running shoes, but I tend to roll my ankles in them when I am kickboxing and my fashionable black Sketchers aren't very comfortable. My size 7 - 7 1/2 foot is more on the wide side and I don't have any problems with my arch.

Can someone please recommend where I can get a good pair of black crosstrainers? They don't seem to carry all black for women...what gives? I don't want all white or anything too "girly."

Thanks ladies...I know we all love shoes, so I'm sure I'll get some good responses!

My wife teaches kick-boxing; her foot is on the wide side as well. She likes the Nike Shox. Her pair is made for running though. I have the cross-trainer Shox and they work well for me in class. FWIW.

nonerz tried those on. too squishy in the back she said. they did look a bit soft if you sit back on your heels. it might work for kickboxing, but not as a cross trainer that you want to squat in.

i dont think i have ever seen a women's cross trainer in black. all the girls that work at the gym with black shoes had to buy little teeny guys sized shoes.:D

Wrestling shoes. Ko (my BF) has a old pair of Nike wrestling shoes that he swears by. And I'm looking into Adidas.

Title Boxing has a site just for shoes. Check it out.

I squat and dead in them with no probs. I guess it might depend on the particular cross-trainer model though. Mine don't feel "squishy" at all -- even with big loads.

yep, they were too squishy for squats and made for running. They look really cool, but I need something that will provide stabiliity. I can fit in boys shoes...plus they are usually $30 less!

You were trying the running shoe on then? Try the cross-trainer. Perhaps you could find a small-sized men's pair? (If you were trying the trainer, perhaps there's a stiffness difference between the men's and women's cross-trainers.)

I've squatted into the high 400s, dl'd into the mid 500s and leg pressed over a 1000 lb on them with no squishy problems. Mine are black and I actually think they look kinda dorky, but they have been a good shoe for me. I usually prefer solid sole shoes for this kind of lifting though.

Besides, I thought you said these were mainly for kick-boxing? That's what my original recommendation was based upon ...

I belong to Reebok Alliance which is for instructors. They have black kick boxing shoes that would work well for squating as well. Try finding them on the web or get any Reebok # and ask for the Alliance # and see if you can become a member. You get a pretty good discount on clothing and gear. It's worth a shot.

Good luck,

msboss:)

Try Otomix - http://www.otomix.com/

They are kinda expensive, but they have shoes made for weight lifting and boxing-type workouts. And they carry plain black for most shoes.

Running shoes shouldn't be used for anything but running - not even lifting, especially legs. Running shoes have GREAT stability and support for forward motion, but little to NO support and stability for lateral movements. Not good. When you do lateral sports, you NEED a shoe that offers lateral support so your ankles don't roll!

Also, the cushioning in a runnig shoe is all in the back (heel) for shock absorption. For kickboxing you aspend so much time on the balls of your feel - where there is little cushioning in a running shoe. It's possible that could lead to a stress fracture....

The cushioning is also why you shouldn't use a running shoe to lift legs in. Look at any running shoe (preferably a new one). It "slants" down toward the toe, the cushion is in the back. So when you put it on, your body is automatically tilted forward towards the balls of your feet. If you squat, you are not on stable and even ground - you will tilt towards the balls of your feet (harder to push up through the heels). You want a "flat bottom" to do legs in. At least, that's my thought on it. :)

Good luck!

Sorry man...didn't mean to sound like I was bashing your suggestion. I haven't seen the crosstrainer version of these, but I'll search for them in the internet...I really liked the look and they were comfortable too--just can't do the running version.

I'd like a different pair of shoes for every occasion but that can get pretty expensive!

Eh I love my otomix! The biggest thing for me is having a pair of shoes I can comfortably put my custom orthodics into. This is the only shoe I've had luck with. The rest just dont' quite pull it for me. I did buy the cross trainers tho, and not the soft side lifting shoes. I doubt my wonderful orthodics would work well in those.

No problem -- and I'm sorry for carrying on about them; was just trying to be accurate in my representation. :)

Shoes can get expensive -- but damn, they're worth it ...

I get all my sports shoes from the mens' section. The women's section is full of foo-foo aerobics gear in my experience.

I have a pair of black reebok general training shoes. They don't look fantastic, fairly boring, but they are fine for gym work of various kinds.

Best "footwear" for martial arts is bare feet though!

If you're working off of mats; if you're working off of polished wood floors, your feet get torn up.

Freddy! It's an italian fitness wear company, and they've got lots of kick boxing stuff, plus some of the coolest black shoes you've ever seen.

www.freddy.com

And I get all my low rise bootleg tights from them; I won't even try anyone else's. :-)

thanks for all your help! JJ--their website is awesome! I'm a wanna be computer nerd, so I'm easily impressed by flashy websites! :D

I like the rotating shoes. :-)

Freddy's has every type of shoe you might need for fitness/cardio/kick boxing/dance. I'd stick with the Chuck Brown's for deadlifting though.

BTW - Thanks Spatts for the Chuck Brown idea. I switched over after we figured out my shoes were part of the reason I was having difficulties pulling backward. That slight lift in the heel of a cross trainer was enough to be throwing my DL off.

My running shoes have caused problems (ankle rolls) for me when I'm doing my kickboxing thing...I like to work the carpet!

at first, then you end up with massively thick skin on your feet, that takes care of the problem. But maybe nonerz doesn't want that, I can understand why!

Must work off a different type of wood floor than I do -- or have a greater affinity for massively thick skin on your feet (or, I could be heavier on my feet) :)

I refuse to practice in shoes though. Sometimes, if I'm too torn up, I'll slip on socks -- but that can get dangerous as far as slipping.

Either way, I like mats (and bare feet) better -- get more rolling time.

mats sound like fun...at 24 hr Fitness, you have to wear shoes in the kickboxing class. Plus the carpet is old and nasty...don't want any fungi or anything else that could "grow" on me!

Most of the kickboxing classes we do are on the hard floor and you have to wear shoes/hand wraps -- occasionally we get to do it in the martial arts studio (where the mats are) though; my wife and I also practice Phillipino MMA (nice way to spend time together), which is where the bare foot time comes from ...
