I once read an article where scientists tried to figure out how strong a chimp was. They put a big barbell (700lb from what I remember) in the 'play area'. Well when the chimp was playing he would routinely pick up (deadlift) the weight like it was nothing).

I dont have anywhere near as miuch confidence as some in a humans ability to take on a male chimp. Ever seen a chimps teeth? What about how fast they move when only playing? What about the agility?

I reckon an unarned human would be fucked.........

section on primate strength, page 62 of the 1992 paperback version:

As far as why the chimp can do this.........chimps have little legs and long arms. The distance he needs to move the weight will therefore be small. However, you also have to bear in mind that chimps are pretty explosive animals........they have to be to survive in the wild. This will help alot. Effectively the muscles are more efficient (powerlifters often train for explosiveness for just this reason).

What I find particularly impressive is that despite the deadlift being a very technical lift, the chimp still outlifts the very best powerlifters of the same bodyweight.
