This thread mentions beliefs and its impact on lives. The Crusades to me seems to be a red flag for beliefs and its impact on lives.

The exact reason that science has so many checks and balances in it so that someone can't say "this is right and prefect" without much discussion, analysis, and proper testing.
If they are wrong, then they will admit it and word is out that it is wrong.
Everything is assumed to be wrong unless proven otherwise.

I think that there is a difference between understanding the basic conception of morality that is seen across societies and holding your country/religion above that of everyone who is not of the same country/religion.
