Correct Form on Squats

I always stand with feet about shoulder length, toes pointed strait foward and normally wear a belt. A guy at the gym today said point your toes outward (heels in) with about a 6 inch wider stance. oh and he said no belt. I don't over use the belt, only on squats over 300 pounds or deadlifts. If I point my toes out sometimes my knees hurt, so I can't see how that's better other than the fact you can go lower.

depends on what your goal is. i always track my knees with my toes. if i don't my knees hurt. going wider has its benefits, going lower does too. it all depends on what you are looking for out of your squats.

About a year ago, I used to use the Smithy exclusively for squatting (however, the bros here enacted a virtual seance and exersized the demon of lameness from me...)

While on the Smith, I kept feet closer and toes straight...decent on the quads, but get same thing from safer Leg Press (IMHO).

Doing REAL squats, on the rack and after experiementing different ways, I'm most comfortable with toes out (about 45 degrees) with feet semi-wide (about shoulder width) and just about ATF. Straight back, head level but looking up...I think this form provides better balance; also, while going ATF the quads are outta the way when wide.

You mentioned your knees ached....I usually slow jog about 1/2 mile and really stretch out quads/hams before my leg WO.

Like you, I only use the belt if going heavy....

Really enjoying the 20 rep workouts in the mid to upper 200lbs. Really helps settle in on form also....

Good luck

I go for a very wide stance on the squat myself with my toes pointing outwards. I then push out the knees on the descent. My squats are very good, well controlled, and the development I have seen on my legs in terms of muscle and strength has been superb. The key is good form and the stance that suits you best.
