cooking question

Im making a dinner for me and my ex, its not like i have to impress her but i want it to be nice.

I want to make steaks, but in the oven, its too cold to grill. Can I bake them in broth with carrots and onions etc? Im also going to saute asparagus and cook up some brown rice.

Also, for the rice, what can i add to it to make it taste good, and not so bland?

dinner with the ex = always a good idea

yeah

Just have her over.

Listen to her tell you how bad her current bf is. (if she admits having one)

Then, bang her.

Cook 2 steaks for yourself.

it's NEVER to cold to grill. . .it's about 20 degrees here today, snowing like hell and the damn wind is blowing like 30 miles an hour. . .i went home for lunch, fired up the grill and tossed a couple of ribeyes on it. . .

it's a steak. . .it ain't a fucking pot roast. cowboy up and use the damn grill!

ask N2, he's prolly got a suggestion or two. My problem with his reciepies is that I don't have Madagascar lemmon tamarind essence or Spanish Swahele non pitted olives and shit. I have salt, pepper and Lauwries season salt, if it has something other than that, unless it's in the useless spice rack that gathers dust on the counter, forget it....

I'm don't cook much oven steak, but I think the technique is, turn oven on broil, put rack all the way on the top, broil each side 2-5 minutes.

Grill 'em. Only way a steak should be done.

you can do anything to anything I guess, but I've never baked or heard of anyone baking a steak, so NO.

Go get a roast, throw all that shit in there, carrots, potatoes and onion, season with aforementioned Lawries season salt and pepper, set oven for 375 and cook till it's done, proly about 2.5-3 hours for a 3lb roast. Buy some brown n serve rolls, done.

But.... why!?

Get an oven proof skillet (cast iron is perfect for this) screaming hot and sear the steaks for a couple of minutes on each side to brown the outside and seal in the juices.

Then put them under a preheated broiler for Boneless Steak: Steaks that are 1/2" to 1" should be cooked for 8 - 14 minutes for medium rare and 12 - 18 minutes for medium. Turn them only once.

Bone in Steak: Steaks that are 1/2" to 1" should be cooked for 7 - 14 minutes for medium rare, 11 - 18 minutes for medium. Turn them only once.

HTH

I like to finish mine with a pat of butter (not margarine)

ps ---under no circumstances should you bake it without searing it first. That would render a pale, gray sort of yucky result.

Oh yeah, and it goes without saying that you should season your steaks first before searing. Of course, right? lol.

I used an onion soup mix the butcher suggested at the market. Its in the fridge, it should be marinating for 4 hours before i cook it.

Meh. rub in salt and cracked black pepper into both sides of the meat before you sear it. =-)
