Considering breast implants

Since I was never blessed by nature when it comes to my breasts, I've given good thought to buying myself a set as a 30th birthday present. I'm 3.5 years from that time, but for something this important I'd like to do thorough research. I'm pretty much set on what I want: 300cc smooth round under the muscle.

Ladies who have them: What do I need to look for in a doctor/office? What is the recovery time like? With an extremely active lifestyle am I going to be hating them after a year? Any input you ladies are willing to share PLEASE DO! I want to hear it all... good and bad.

Thanks.

Hi D - definitely a good way to start - knowledge is power.

First I would recommend thoroughly reading www.implantinfo.com. I'm sure there are lots more sites out there now, but I did a crap load of research in 2000 on that website. You want to do things like locate some doctors to go do a consultation with - these consults should be free in most cases. You also want to research their backgrounds to be sure they don't have any malpractice suits against them. Make sure they have the appropriate licenses as well.

As far as what size you want, you can discuss this with the doc. I don't know how you arrived at 300 cc - you would want to look more at how a certain size looks on you. 300 cc on a small person would probably be hyuge while on a larger person, would be very small. To give you an idea, I'm 5'7" with very wide shoulders - I started at sort of an A-B cup and got 425cc & 475 cc to end up w/ a D cup.

Do you go under or over - that's your choice. Most BB girls go over because it doesn't involve cutting into the muscle as it would w/ under. I got under, though I did 2 BB competitions within 10 months after the surgery. I think we still debate as to whether or not unders interfere w/ your ability to build a competitive chest. My doc said it had no impact at all. I've never built up to the level of serious competition so I can't speak to any limitation as a result of my surgery. Unders will take longer to heal because there was a cut into the muscle. Lots of people will be healed very quickly w/ the overs. I personally have been very happy w/ mine.

With unders, my recovery time was 6-8 weeks - the first 2 days were pure misery, the first week was doable, the first 2 weeks were touchy because I had a limited range of motion w/ my upper body (checking over my shoulder while driving SUCKED). At the end of 4 weeks I was pretty comfortable and I started training for competition 2-3 months later.

I really wouldn't say there were any bad parts of the whole thing except for immediately after the surgery and the next day or two. After that not nearly so bad. I was on pain killers for about 4 days and really just had to watch my range of motion until I was healed. Since then I've had no problems at all. Well, I guess the one issue I've encountered is that I am a stomach-sleeper and it feels weird to sleep directly on the ol' girls. So I end up propping my upper body up on my arms & I think this has strained my shoulders & back a little. So I make sure I still stretch out a lot, make sure my back is strong & get the occassional good deep tissue massage to help.

On the good side, clothes fit soooooooooo much better and they feel completely natural. I have a tiny bit of numbness around parts of the breast, but since I wasn't particularly sensitive there in the first place, it doesn't really bother me.

Thank you Sassy! That's great to read. I'm not completely sold on the exact size, but from images I've pulled up on the internet the 300cc size seems to consistanly give the look I'm going for. I'm 5'5", have wide shoulders and an A cup. 300ccs would more than likely give me the C cup I would prefer. Anything larger would get in the way of a lot of my hobbies. I have several decisions to make in the next 3 years so the thoughts I have now about what I want will more than likely change as I learn.

One worry I do have is numbness of the nipples... I LOVE having my nipples played with during sex. Has anyone had this happen? Does it come and go or is it a permanent problem?

I was concerned about my nipples being less sensitive when I had mine done.

The Dr. went right through the nipple. I still have all my sensitivity.

I had a total mastopexy as I nursed several rugrats going from an A/barely B cup to DD's several times in a few years - no breast tissue to speak of, only GOBS of loose skin! YECK!!!

I had the nipples totally removed and cut down, breast cut down the front and underneath but the scars healed so nicely that you can barely notice. I danced for a few years (2 months of stripping) and NO ONE ever noticed the scars.

I was concerned about nipple sensitivity myself, but after the surgery mine actually became MORE sensitive. Or should I say that because of the nursing and all the stretching I guess I never realized how much less sensitive my nipples had become. I was REALLY HAPPILY surprized when after the surgery the sensitivity came back!!!! ;)

...but this was only me. I was warned that I may lose all feeling.

Good luck! I am TOTALLY HAPPY with the girls. Had them done about 7 years ago and am due for a change-up. I have saline now, but will go to silicone next time around as they feel so much more natural. I have a full C-cup with under the muscle implants. I did 3 BBing comps after the boobjob and it never interfered with either my training or development. However, I did notice that as I have lost mass (I no longer compete.) my implants have dropped a bit. Now they look totally natural which is not such a bad thing but when I get them redone I will get either a different shape implant or whatever as I want a bit more fullness and cleavage just above the nipple. Not freaky-feature-stripper looking, just a bit more pert I guess. LOL

Just to clarify, I dont' have a problem w/ sensitivity around my nipples, I also went in thru the nipple - but there are some areas around the breast itself that are a bit numb.

Again, before you get caught up in # cc's, get some consults w/ a doc. Generally you tell them what size you are looking for - e.g. cup size - and then they will ask if you want to err on the high side or low side. In all honesty, they end up acting as an "artist" of sorts because in the end they are eyeballing the actual size & balance of the result. This is where you want to find a doc who is conservative (i.e. wasn't recommended to you as "the guy who does all us girls down at the strip joint") and be very clear about the size that you want. They ask if you want to err on the larger side or smaller side because statistically most girls come back later & wish they had gone bigger.

Thank you ladies! This is helping a lot. Please keep the input coming. :)

WOW.

I think this may be the best BOOB thread yet.

I'm totally envious of those with boobies sans bra.

Sassy just a question, I too have your problem now, nursed 2 babies, the loose skin on my breasts is HORRIBLE...I am going to a reduction and lift next year...

How long did your recovery take?? I heard that reductions take longer to recover from than implants..

I had a lift with under the muscle implants. I had the lift done twice and will go in one more time because of scaring problems. I'm one of those unlucky ones but I'm still glad I had it done. My lift was done a second time because the original wasn't done quite high enough and I had post op infection that left awful scars. The 2nd time the lift was done perfectly but I had problems with scaring again. My body rejects disolvable stitches and although I had my last surgery done in Feb, just this week I had an undisolved stitch pop out. Next time (when I get my tummy tuck done) the dr. will use regular stitches to avoid this. My left nipple lost most of it's sensitivity during the first procedure but most of it came back. After the 2nd procedure it's still somewhat numb and when my nipples get hard, the numb one is about a minute behind the other one.

The only problems I had with the implants were post-op infection during the first procedure which left some tissue scaring and slow healing of the muscle...I didn't train chest for a year after the first surgery due to pain. I got 450cc's, round, high profile, saline, under the muscle. I was a small 36D before surgery and am now a full 36DD or 38D, depending on the bra. A couple of years ago I was a 38DDD so having big boobs is natural for me. When I nursed I was a JJ cup...grrrrrrr...hence me needing a lift. I like having the implants under the muscle for a few reasons. They look and feel perfectly natural without a bra on, mamograms can be performed without problem (over the muscle they have to use ultra sound which isn't as good for detecting cancer), and my boobs won't sag with the weight of the implants like they would with overs. Mine are completely under, not just partial, do some research with your doctor, some doc's do partials but don't really explain that, then later the implants can drop.

I'd say a good way to figure out what size implant you will want is to get a bra in the size you like (you can wear a tight t-shirt and go try on bras, stuff them with socks in the store). When you're in the doctor's office, bring that bra with you and try stuffing it with different size implants. If you go under the muscle, the muscle will compress the implant a bit so pick something just slightly larger than you want.

The pain you have right after surgery truly sucks. With under the muscle implants it's worse than with overs. It's like...imagine someone just wedged a softball under your pec and the muscle is pulled tight across it. You'll also get some shooting pains into your nipples at times during the first couple of weeks but that goes away quickly. Driving is difficult and so is putting on a coat or jacket. Sports bras that zipper up the front are your easiest and most comfortable means of support for the first 2 months after surgery. Right after surgery you'll be bound up like a mummy for a few days...it feels sooo good when they take that off! Take the pain meds they offer you for the week after surgery, no need to suffer any more than you have to. I found it nearly impossible to get the safety cap off the bottle right after surgery so I stopped using it. I also used a step stool in the kitchen when cooking, I'm short and after surgery you don't want to raise your arms up very high because it hurts. You'll want someone around to help you for the first few days, but by day 4 you should be fine on your own. Most women get constipated after surgery so taking metamucil a few times a day will help. The anestessia and pain meds are what causes constipation. Shaving and washing your hair will be difficult. I have a big shower and brought in a plastic step stool so I could sit down while I shaved my legs and I'd sit on it when my husband washed my hair. Because I had a lift done, I had to keep the area dry, I don't know how difficult that is with other incisions but having some help in the shower with my hair was a blessing.

Research is your best friend. Along with implantinfo.com here's are some other sites I found helpful:

http://www.justbreastimplants.com/

http://www.plasticsurgery.org/public_education/procedures/AugmentationMammoplasty.cfm

Most doctors will give you a free consultation. Ask to see pictures of the doctor's work. I had one doc. say he couldn't show me pics for patient privacy reasons, then he wanted to do my boobs and tummy tuck together and offered a discount, then when I didn't plan surgery with him he charged me a consultation fee. I later found out that doctor messed up two of my friends, so be wary, if the doc doesn't seem right, he probably isn't. I found the doctor who did my surgery by asking my gyn for a refference and I asked around in my gym. I'm very happy with my doctor. Although I had problems, they were not forseeable and not his fault, just bad luck.

I was in the same sitch as you - I looked like a 65 yr old native from National Geographics! GOD IT WAS AWFUL!!!

I had the mastopexy and implants. I went under the muscle and the pain was TERRIBLE!!! So much so that I regretted it until I went shopping 3 days later.. ;)

I believe I was totally out of the gym for like 6 weeks. In bad pain for like a week, couldn't sleep on my side (I'm a side sleeper) for like a month.

I love the result!!! And am looking forward to trading up soon as I have had them for like 7 years now. All implants should be replaced around 10 years. At least this is what my doc told me.

LOL I was the same way. I took pics the morning before surgery to remind myself how bad I was afterwards. Not just one pic but a pic as I was bent over too...omg, National Geographic here I come!

Even now with the scars, I'm still much happier than I was before...at least my boobs don't fall out of my bra...when I wear one. :D

Well, I never had any kids, but after I saw my "before" pictures I felt bad for every guy who ever saw me nekkid pre-op. Really sad. I never new it was that bad. So no, I DO NOT look at those pictures. I have not regretted my decision from day one. I often wonder if / when I'll have to go in for replacements though. I don't look forward to that and I think of keeping a spare stash of money to pay for it when it happens, cuz its not like you can go back once you get 'em.

LOL puddles - "at least my boobs didn't fall out of my bra ..." - shit girl, mine were never big enough to fall anywhere. I often wondered what the point of a bra was in the first place. But I couldn't get away without one.

LOL you girls are funny!!! I can't wait to get my lift and tummy tuck done.....3 c-sections really does a number on the lower abdomen.......

I will research doctors very carefully before i make any decisions....but I will most likely get it done in Toronto.....

Forgot to add I still wear my nursing bras, they are the most comfortable for me right now...even though my hubby is sick of seeing them LOL

The links you ladies supplied are great! Thank you!! I'm looking forward to turning 30... how odd. :)

I'm not even thinking about implants...but what a great informative thread. I think sharing like that helps other women make even more informed decisions. Maybe I'll want/need to get something done after I have kids. But not yet. :)

From the pictures I've seen of you, you don't need them. :)

big tits are a liability....like buying a smooth, new ride, but you know it's gonna start getting dinged and shabby around the edges no matter how hard you try to maintain it.

I pack full C cups and I recently turned 21 so I guess my car is still in it's first year. But I am acutely aware that they have nowhere to go but down!

LOL

I was a 36D when I was 17 and went to my prom. My Godfather did not approve of my dress and put a broach on it to help hide my cleavage. I was married a few months later and into a 36DD. I continued to grow slowly until after I stopped nursing my daughter when I was 28 and a JJ cup. Then they began to deflate like an old hellium balloon.

My mom likes the results I got from my lift and next year, at the age of 65, she is going in for a lift! I'm so happy for her. :)

I had other plastic surgery work done, and am due for a final post-op visit soon....but I'm going to ask for other things....

My PS here where I am was rated #3 in DE behind a guy whose name I can't pronounce & his brother...LOL

I want a lift too, but my PS does Anchor scars shaped like: --)
I don't want that! I want the one where they cut the areola off and stuff in the implant then cut off the skin & put the areola back on.....but then I couldn't get under the muscle implants.....

I have mid-pstosis (breast sag) -- they are pretty low....I have the $$$ but I'm afraid to have my boobs done....

I want some other work done 1st, so I'll see about that and he wants to cut off a mole  too, so we'll see what he says....
