no this shit is sick
Im watching right now, fucking bastards

Get your original Windows CD's. Make sure you have the license key around too (a sticker or piece of paper that has a key like "3XH3-5QP3-etc. etc." If you bought a canned system like a Dell or an HP, the windows disc may be called something like "windows system recovery disk".

Then, put the first CD in the drive and boot the PC off it. You'll get an option to blow-away your existing partition and re-format the hard drive. Do that... if you get a choice, do a "low level format" for even better cleanliness. Then let it re-install Windows and re-enter your license key.

That should make you 100% clean.

Make a bootable floppy with that program and it'll write the hard drive with all zero's.

That would clean-off the system well, but I bet his friend wants/needs a bootable Windows PC.

I hope you have your windows CD's btw... you'll need those and your license keys.

does just looking at encrypted mail make it part of your hard drive that can be seen later upon investigation?

You may have some usernames and passwords cached in internet explorer or other applications that require signon. Your "favorates" or your IE recently used URL list could even guide a user to the right sites.

Also, you could have some temporary internet objects cached that are of an interesting nature (i.e. picture headers from the banners on your favorate porn sites).

And finally, you may have subscribed usegroups and/or downloaded messages. Just imagine having a few hundred binary posts from alt.binaries.spoo_on_them_hooters :P

I dont visit porn sites so it doesnt matter and I dont visit illegal sites or do anything but I have looked at price lists for grey market materials, I dont really care that much though b/c I dont break the law

Probably the worst thing for me on this computer comes from all the links off this board I chase. I don't go directly to pornographic sites (but I do occasionally peruse the "Pictures of Women" section). The catch is, a lot of the image and video links posted on these boards that aren't necessarily sexual in nature have banner ads to things like "Adult Friend Finder" and other sexually explicit sites.

Personally I think it's no biggie to have a few naughty banners cached on your hard drive, but it also depends on the person. I remember a funny link to a story on these boards, and there was a banner ad right next to it that showed a naked girl obviously in pain with the logo "DP -- one in the pink and one in the stink". I thought to myself, "now that would be a great GIF to have sitting in my temporary internet files folder should I consider handing this computer down to my preacher!"

yeah I guess, I dont worry though, Ive seen the adult friend finder on video links that are posted here. I just roll my eyes at the fake women they have. I seriously dont worry about this stuff given that anyone online has that innocently on their own computer.
That stuff doesnt interest me, its contributing to the cause, just a moral/ethical decision.
So my computer is clean Im sure except for what Hotzie sent me
:worried:

I just wrapped my hard drive with 370 feet of 12 guage wire attached to a toggle and the +12v source on the CPU power supply. Flick of a switch, presto chango, you ain't reading shit, Mr. G-Man. I just placed the HD in a magnetic field of approximately 550 gauss.

You forgot to include "Fuck you Pintoca, I knew you would click on this" on the the first post.

On the serious side, we are going through an evaluation of software for this same thing. We are entering an outsourcing deal with a company, who specifically added to the contract that if they have any loss of revenue as a result of we not wiping the machines effectively, we are liable WITH NO LIMIT to their damage.

So, it's a balance between cost (in manhours required) and security. You could write 27 times a complete hard drive, with 0, with 1, with randoms 0 and 1... etc. So far for us, it's cheaper to take out the disk, destroy it (physical destruction) and slap in a new cheap 40Gb unit.

Word on the street is that ANY HD can be at least partially recovered. There is a company who recovered data from some burned HD from 9/11 dude... imagine that

then download this program

http://www.heidi.ie/eraser/

It's freeware

you have several options. There are 2 which are DoD compliant (3 and 7 passes) and Gutmann which is 35 passes (and takes a while).

What you should do is the following: Download one of those Trace eliminator programs, delete all your traces. Then manually delete all your stuff and then run eraser and tell it to rewrite (7 or 35 passes) all the EMPTY SPACE on your disk. IN this way, all that you deleted will remain deleted (basically you overwrite all the old stuff)

That is a balance.

holy crap just reformat it and it will be like a new puter
