how do you set the DPI size for programs like photoshop? I take pics with a 5.0 megapixel digital cam and every single one that I open in photoshop opens at 72dpi. Why is this? How can I change it to automatically open and save my work in 300 dpi?

you might have your camera set up to take the lowest dpi pics. most digital cameras let you take pics in low res, medium res. and hi res.

but if you're not taking them in low res- when you see the dpi of the pic in photoshop at 72, just change it to 300 (if thats what you want) and reduce the physical size of the pics.

Yes, photoshop is automactically opening all files at 72dpi resolution. From what I understand, the digital cam itself is only going to matter in terms of resolution quality when you go to print the pics off. But most monitors are set to only display in 72 dpi due to their limitations. Thing is, I often forget to change to 300dpi. Damn it.

its not something you can change i don't think.
i deal with a lot of photos all day- some i want at 72 cause they are going on the net, others I want at 300 cause they are going on literature, so i change them. you should really change the size and resolution together, because they usually open at a low resolution and HUGE size.

So basically if I take a pic with 5megapxs at the highest resolution setting... open it in photoshop, it automatically comes out at 72dpi... I can then increase the dpi to 300 and it will actually shrink the overall size of the image?

No, I think you have to manually do both.

In Photoshop, goto

Edit > Preferences > Units and Rulers and you'll see an option to set the "new document print resolutions" CHange it to whatever you want.
