coffee why does it drop some people

kiwibrian

New member
hi guys , got a lady friend 63 years old that says when she drinks coffee 10 mins later it drops her on a low but tea doesnt

what do you think kiwibrian

Coffee generally has more caffeine than tea per volume unit. I have found that a higher amount of caffeine is more likely to make me crash. I would like to understand what causes caffeine crashes. Anyone?

Caffeine somehow lowers blood sugar. That is why it is traditionally consumed with sweets (coffee, tea).

Caffeine impairs insulin-stimulated glucose uptake human skeletal muscle. In other words caffeine can decrease insulin sensitivity in healthy humans, possibly as a result of elevated plasma epinephrine levels. This can lead to short term high insulin AND blood glucose levels which may then be followed by a 'crash' in glucose levels. This is probaly even more pronounced in folks who are already partially insulin insensitive.

Now if kiwibrians friend was drinking coffe on an empty stomach (fasted state) there is also some evidence that it can directly cause increases in blood glucose and insulin. In other words you don't need to eat carbs to get this effect! Caffeine seems to stimulate insulin independant glyconeogenesis rather than mobilization of liver glycogen.

good info.

MS, do you avoid caffeine. I seem to be fine with decaf when i drink coffee. Sometimes it's more the hot coffee itself that i want rather than the caffeine. It just makes my stomach feel nice. When i really need or want caffeine, i take a pill.

hmm I find caffeine pills can take hours to have an effect. (cue the time I took 8 in 2 hours coz I thought they weren't working, I was at an all-night club - couldn't sleep all next day either).
