I think it obsolete, I was pretty much forced to marry so I could bring my husband with me...

Humans are not biologically monogamous. There are tons of studies that prove it. Marriage is a construct of society that goes against our biological need for variety.

No 5 is good. If it was meant to be you can always renew, but if it wasnt meant to be you are stuck all the more length of time.
hmm, I don't think 5 years is long enough. I think being able to renew every 7 -10 years is a good enough commitment if you are going to the trouble to get married. Girls like myself can do 5 years w/o blinking an eye

Defeats the purpose as most divorces happen before that time frame. Half the population is not a girl or like you or can do that sort of thing in the blink of an eye.

Thats the whole point. most people cant project their lives 5 years into the future with any certainty so 5 years is good enough. Besides if it was a 10 year contract all we would have is a shitton of breached contracts because people want out. Instead of people simply deciding not to renew the contract after 5 years. People arent going to stay married because they signed a contract for 10 years.

I've read a couple of studies that showed the average biological life of a relationship is 4-5 years. After that a need for sexual variety arises.
Some good books that cover some of the historical and scientific literature, while providing some crazy interviews (I mean crazy) are "The Lifestyle" by Terry Gould and "Insatiable Wives: Women Who Stray and the Men Who Love Them" by Dr. David Ley. Ley is a man who isn't afraid to cross boundaries. He is a clinical psychologist too.
If you want a great book (and Nan might like this) to know what it is like to be in a situation like mine read "The Sex-Starved Marriage" by Michele Weiner Davis. Never in my life would I have thought this would have happened to me. There is a story in the first chapter about a wife, the hell she went through, in a marriage with a man who doesn't want sex. I could have written it word for word. If you are single read this book and think very carefully about the person you are going to marry. My marriage went from being fantastic to a disaster, and it happened around the 5th year we were married.

Declining Moral Fabric = Less marriages.
Ever seen how people act on reality shows? How many here know of people who got divorced or in unhappy relationships/marriages. The fact that men can't earn a secure wage for themselves let alone a wife, kids and home - does not encourage women to tie the knot either.

Very few cultures on this planet practice strict monogamy (about 80%). The US is one of the few exceptions. Establishing strict rules governing the relationships between men and women is the source of the problems we face. Think outside the box.
55% of men cheat on their spouses. 50% of women do the same and the percentage is growing as women obtain more power in society. There is a reason for these statistics. Forcing an institution that has a limited role in society is the source of our ills, not the solution to our problems. Recognizing humans are not monogamous would be a step in the right direction.
I'm gonna go buy a suitcase of sex toys and live in a deserted island...

I mean for a Man once he truly loves a Women it would be impossible for him to hurt her.
I know its rare to find men or women like this, but for the ones that are like this or could be like this, its impossible.
I have to keep myself from liking a girl too much even in a normal relationship, the thought of cheating is just NOT an option for me ( not in a clingy way either i could give a shit about my emotions)
I could never hurt someones daughter and leave her ruined.
How Married people cheat esp when they have kids is mind boggling to me.

Cheating is not an option. Many people, a majority, do it though.
People marry for the wrong reasons. I'm not saying I didn't make that mistake. It's better to be alone than to be with a man/woman who has a wandering heart/eye and who isn't your best friend in the entire world. Someone you can't talk to and who won't talk to you, a fuggin mute. Marriage isn't about love, its about commitment, struggle, family and kids. Nothing else. If you don't want family/kids I don't understand why you would even get married. If a guy has an attitude of "nice tits, not too big but that's okay DDs just hit the floor when she is 40, nice legs though" lol not a good sign for life partner. I want to be married when I'm old. I see cute old people all the time.

Awesome point. I thought the same thing when I met my wife. I knew she would be there when I was 80 holding my hand on my deathbed and she would be a great mom. She is. I just didn't realize I would be miserable the entire duration getting there.
